Chapter 2
"Flippin' heck!" Scade screams, slamming on the breaks. It's too late. We rocket towards the edge of the cliff. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for full impact. But it never came. Slowly, I open my eyes and find that the helicopter has clamped some sort of metal anchor onto our car. Scade looks at me and to my surprise his eyes are swimming with tears."Scade," I say quietly. "Why did you kidnap me?"
"W-hat?" He saw my face and sighed deeply. "The reason I kidnapped you was-" he was cut off by a police man pulling open the door.
"Hands in the air," he said, holding out a gun. Scade took one look at him and dragged me out of the car with him, surprising me. Arm wrapped around my throat, he ran into the small clearing.
"If anyone comes any nearer I'll shoot her!" he yelled. I was filled with dread. Would he really shoot? I was stupid to think he would ever think me more than his prisoner. The police man who had opened the door tried talking to him.
"Look kid, we won't hurt you-we just want the girl." Scade tightened his grip on me and clicked a bullet into place. Gasps and small screams came from the circle we were standing in. I froze, thoughts racing in my mind. Before anybody else could do anything, Scade had dragged me over to an empty police car and bundled me into the back.
"Sorry," he said, surprising me. "But if you're in the back it looks more like I'm kidnapping you." I suppressed a wide grin. Of course he wouldn't shoot me. He was too innocent for that. Those wide brown eyes, that brown soft hair...just listen to me! I'm such an idiot. He drove off and chortled with glee as a following police car tried to stay on our tail but crashed into a tree.
"Yeah, my dad will NOT be happy."
"Who cares about him, that was epic!" I had a sudden urge to go home. Tears swelled in my eyes as I thought of my super king sized bed surrounded with purple silk curtains and the feeling of my cat, snuggling against me. Scade was still talking but I couldn't understand a word he said, it sounded distant and faraway. He turned around and saw me.
"Bella, what's up?" I quickly wiped the tears from my eyes and looked at him seriously.
"What's the reason then?"
"What?" he asked.
"You were going to answer my question but the policeman distracted you." He looked at me, his brown eyes staring innocently.
"Fine. I'll tell you. My mother died five years ago and ever since me and my dad have been living alone by ourselves. In a shed."
I gasped. That wasn't what I had been expected at all. I didn't realize he would have actually needed the money this badly.
"Didn't that guy on the phone say something about your brother?"
"Yeah. He's with us. He's three." A lump formed in my throat and coughing was all I could do to stop myself crying. He could trust me ... but could I trust him?
