Is the saying "If you love something set it free, if it comes back it is yours" really true?

I've never really understood til I began feeling for someone who had someone else in their life to make them complete. Realizing this I let em go and decided to move on possibly til something changed or whatever but it doesn't really matter to me anymore it has once it'll never matter again.
