Well, the chicken needs to lay an egg to be able to have another chicken. But the chicken needs to hatch out of an egg to be "officially" born this question has always gotten me..... The world may never know...

the chicken evolved from a dinosaur.
dino ---- chicken ---- egg (the egg hatched, a dino was born. Over years dino became chicken. then the chicken layed the egg.
