The Boy Without a Fairy
Chapter 2.

The Great Deku Tree

As Link began walking through the path which led to the tree, a carnivorous plant creature sprouted from the ground. A Deku Ba-Ba. Link swung his blade around, decapitating the monster. More of these sprouted as he neared the Great Tree, all of which he defeated with his small blade. After slaying the Deku Ba-Ba, Link finally came upon the tree.

"Oh... Navi... Thou hast returned... Link... Welcome... Listen carefully to what I, the Deku Tree, am about to tell thee... Thy slumber these past moons must have been restless, and full of nightmares... As the servants of evil gain strength, a vile climate pervades the land and causes nightmares to those sensitive to it... Verily, thou hast felt it... Link... The time has come to test thy courage... I have been cursed... I need you to break the curse with your wisdom and courage. Dost thou have courage enough to undertake this task?" The tree spoke. Link nodded. "Very well then." The Great Deku Tree opened his mouth wide. Link, after looking back at the daylight once more, entered the tree's mouth.
Inside of the tree, it was like a whole new world, with old wooden bridges, strange creatures and sounds which he'd never heard before. Spider webs draped the walls, a result of the curse. On some of these webs, skulltula scrambled about. The sounds that the spiderlike creatures created when they moved echoed through the hollow tree and sent shivers down Link's spine.
The boy climbed some vines which had attached themselves to the wall, and then stepped onto one of the bridges. It was quite shaky, and Link felt like the wooden planks beneath his feet could give out any minute. He began to walk forward. The bridge creaked. At last, he reached the end. A large, wooden platform protruded from the tree's walls. Link jumped forward, and grabbed onto the edge of the platform with his bare hands. He grunted as he pulled himself up onto it, then stood up and glanced around. The fairy boy leapt towards the bridge on the other side. He dragged himself onto the bridge, then grimaced as he looked down at his hands. He had a thin piece of wood wedged beneath the skin of his palm. Link managed to push aside the stinging sensation of the splinter. He began navigating the dungeon carefully, avoiding any monster that had the potential of injuring him more. He finally reached the highest point of the tree. There, he found three giant skulltulla attached to a ring of web. Link was able to easily slay these, using some deku seeds and his slingshot.
After battling the arachnids, Link glanced down at the floor below. There was only one way down; He'd have to jump. But he knew surely that if he just plunged off of the top floor, he'd break, or at least severely injure both of his legs. Being the smart boy he truly was, Link noticed a large spider web In the middle of the floor below. He inhaled deeply, before jumping off of the wooden platforms.
To Link's surprise,  the spider web didn't break his fall. The Little swordsman fell straight through the stretchy web. He braced himself for impact of the floor below. He knew that even if he did survive, he would be much too weak to save the Great Tree,  succumb to his injuries, and probably perish within the-
"SPLASH"
Link landed in a deep pool, inhaling a mouthful of water in a gasp of surprise.  He glanced around, his vision slightly blurry from the shock he'd faced just then. Link rose to the surface of the tiny pool and frantically swam to the nearest plot of solid ground. "Navi-" He began. The fairy boy doubled over and began to cough violently, due to the liquid he'd accidentally inhaled. Once he'd finished, he looked up at Navi, who danced before his hazy eyes. "Navi, are we still alive?" He whispered.
"Yes. You'd landed in an underground pool of water", the fairy replied.
Link shakily stood up, and took another look around the room. To one side of the room was a ledge on which he could climb, on the other, one which seemed impossible to reach for someone as short as him. He climbed onto the smaller ledge, and then stood on the yellow button switch placed atop it. A nearby torch was lit, which dimly illuminated the underground chamber. He sighed softly, holding a long Deku stick out to the flame.
The young boy then carried his torch over to the large spider's web, which clung to the walls of the dungeon. He gently touched the web with the flaming stick, causing it to burn to ash.
This revealed a small door. As he neared the center of the room, another plant creature sprouted from the floor. This one was quite small, with angry orange eyes. However, it was much less intimidating than the deku babas which he'd battled earlier. Link thought that it actually looked quite cute. However, his mind was immediately changed after being hit in the stomach by one of the plant's seeds. Although the seed had actually been quite small, it had been moving at such speed that the impact had nearly knocked the fairy-boy off his feet. Link held out his deku shield, which not only protected him from the quickly moving projectiles, but also reflected them right back at the monster, causing it to squeak in pain and scurry around. Link approached the deku scrub cautiously. "Ow, Ow, I'm sorry!" The scrub squeaked. "If you promise not to hurt me again, I will tell you how to defeat my brothers ahead. The order is "2, 3, 1. Twenty-three is Number one! Do you think I'm a traitor!?" And with that,  the deku scrub buried itself deep inside of the earth.
Link entered the next room with a sigh, glancing at the floating platform in the middle of another pool of water. A look of unease melted onto his face as he noticed the rotating spike bar above the pool. "Hey, Listen!!" Navi screamed into Link's ear. The fairy boy glanced at the blue ball of light. Navi didn't speak again, but instead floated over to the right wall of the chamber. Through the water around that area, Link could see another switch. He stepped into the cool, clear water, shivering slightly.
The fairy boy began to swim to the bottom. He finally reached the switch, and pressed down on it with his left foot. Immediately, the water level sank
"Tick-tock-tick"
Link swam over to the platform.
"Tick-tock-tick"
He heaved himself onto the floating plot of land, uneasily watching the bar. The platform began to float towards the other side.
"Ticktocktick, Ticktocktick. Ticktockticktockticktockticktock"
The water in the room rose again.
Every joint in the young boy's body locked. He bit down on his lip, realizing what'd happened. Then, he let out a scream.
Link fell backwards into the water with a loud splash. He flung his arms about in a failed attempt to swim to the shore. He dove under the water, then soon found himself unable to get back out. His lungs screamed for air. The gashes which the spikes had left on his back stung. The last thing that Link remembered was the jingling sound of his fairy friend.
