Chapter 1 ~ Discovery

I awoke abruptly in the middle of the night. Through my windows, I could just make out the faint light of dawn peeking above the horizon. The early morning sunlight made the frost on the lawn sparkle. It was getting colder every day, and the snows of winter would soon be arriving. It seemed so silent at this hour of the day, it was as though if a pin dropped in China, I would hear it as though it was right beside me.
Suddenly, a faint glow could be seen through the floorboards in a section of my room. It looked as though someone had turned on a computer and the glow from the screen was projecting an eerie glow through the floorboards. Seemingly, it was in a rectangle-like shape, almost as though there was a mini door there and the light was coming from the other side.
When I first saw the glow, I jumped out of bed in a fright. After a few minutes however, I got used to the eerie-looking glow and decided to investigate before it disappeared. Feeling the area around where the light was coming from, I discovered that there was more of an indent between the floorboards wherever there was a glow. It seemed as though it might actually lead somewhere. If only I could just pry it open a little, maybe it might come loose enough so I could... maybe?... open it.
Who was I kidding? Mystical trapdoors, mysterious lights, and portals to other worlds weren’t real; they were only the stuff I read about. However much I wished they existed, I couldn’t change the fact that they don’t... and most likely never will. Still, I had to find out if this was indeed a door, or just another figment of my imagination.
So, with that in mind, I set to work. Soon enough, I had propped a metal ruler under the wood and was able to lift it up a few inches. Wiggling my hand under the wooden door, I struggled to lift what I now realized was a trapdoor.
Feeling the underneath of the trapdoor, I found a handle and pushed upward with every bit of strength I possessed. I was afraid that it would be very loud when it opened. so of course I was surprised to find that the trapdoor opened unusually quietly for being so heavy.
Suddenly nervous, I descended into the depths that lay beyond the now-open trapdoor. I found myself in a seemingly small, but beautifully furnished room without any windows, (not that I was expecting any that is). There was also some very nice but equally strange mirrors along the walls. They were long and ovalish with a golden rim around them. The strange thing about them wasn’t those things, it was the fact that the “mirrors” were filled with a grayish-blackish looking liquid that swirled around inside the golden frame.
I leaned against one of the many mirrors in the room and was very surprised to find myself falling right through it! I tried to catch myself but it was too late. I closed my eyes, preparing for the worst.
