Henrietta: *Near tears* No Mama, no!!! *sobs while her father looks at her in pity. James kneels beside her and embraces her. She grabs onto his coat fiercely* No no no!
Mr. Fletcher: Henrietta, stop this! I want you to be happy. Do not punish yourself for the pitfalls of your past. You shall dance and be happy. Please, Henrietta! Think of Miss Clarissa and how disappointed she will be.
Henrietta: *recovering slightly* No, Father, no! I mustn't! I will die! My heart would See More▼ break, especially if Etienne and the company are there! No no no!
James: *stroking his sister's hair* Don't do this to yourself, Henrietta, please!
Henrietta: *Recovering.* All is well, James. I am contented! I shall return to my room at the shop and I shall finish my sewing. *shakily moves towards door and leaves silently*
Mr. Fletcher: *sighs and lights a pipe* I tell you, that mind of hers will kill her heart.

Mr. Fletcher: *ponders the story for a minute* Henrietta, come here, please. *She rises and takes her father's hands* Henrietta, my beautiful girl, you spoke of those terrible things with such excitement. You boldly rushed to Miss Raven's aid without knowing her. And yet you speak of how you do not possess enough courage to go to a ball! And how you forsook the ballet because your courage left you! Mrs. Fletcher: Hamish, ça suffit, I will take it from here. Henrietta, come to me si'l vous plait. *Henrietta sits at her mother's knee, resting her head upon her mother's lap* Once upon a time, there was a sweet little mouse who lived in a palace. But she was afraid of the good royalty who lived there. The good royalty and subjects saw the goodness in the little mouse and they wanted to share their good fortune with her. They invited her out and tried coaxing her with treats and gifts, but the still was afraid. Many years passed and the little mouse had turned gray and gaunt, but still she was good and the royalty still hoped she would creep out from her lair, but no avail. The mouse finally passed away from a sad heart and starvation. And the royals mourned. Now, who does this sound like? Henrietta, do not fear the life your father and I gave you. Enjoy the unknown and the impossible... though I know you already do deep down. Go to the ball, ma petit souris. Dance, my daughter, and do not worry about courage or companies. Live with your heart and courage will find you.

[Henrietta has just returned to her parents home so they might console her worried mind. She feels as if she is forgetting something, but doesn't remember. She sits in the parlor]
Henrietta: Oh, Papa, I have had the most exciting day! I thought I might wretch upon the cobblestones in front of nobles! *pulls handkerchief out of bustier and blots her neck and face*
Mr. Fletcher: My poor girl! What has you so vexed?
Henrietta: You wouldn't believe, Father! A girl was nearly kidnapped See More▼ and imprisoned! And I witnessed it! *Pales while James brings her a cold cloth*
James: You're too weak, sister. I would have fought them off or called for help!
Mrs. Fletcher: James! Be good to your sister! Mon cherie, it is not all bad. You have a ball to attend soon! N'est ce pas?
Henrietta: Non, Mama! I can't! After all that I've been through! And to be gay and witty whilst flirting with my gloves and fan... it is not for me, Mama! *James embraces his sister and gives her a reassuring kiss on the cheek*
