~Chapter Four~
DAWN'S POV3 DAYS BEFORE...
"Off you go..." My mother smiled as I walked off to school. I whipped out my paperback book and started reading. I was a very skilled reading-walker, but today was different. In two days I had to go to the job tour and check out all the boring jobs.
The only one I wanted was to be a council member. Yea, they only accepted one Ruby, but I knew I fit the standards and requirements. Today I got distracted and my book dropped out of my hands, landing in a puddle of mud that had been formed from the rain of the night before.
"Dang it.." I muttered, as I picked it up. Facing that it was ruined, I wiped off some of the mud and put it into my backpack, which was slung over one of my shoulders. "Are you reading 'Eleven Seas?" I heard a familiar voice ask. I laughed and looked behind me to see my friend, Aaron.
"I WAS reading it... until it uh..." I took the ruined books out and frowned. He shrugged. "Are you nervous for friday?" He asked. I groaned. "More than i've ever been. You're so luck that you still have 9 months to think about it!" Aaron shrugged.
"It's weird how we're in the same grade, but you're like.. 6 months older than me." He laughed a little bit and I shrugged. "I- I want to be a council member..." I exclaimed closing my eyes. "They don't accept many Rubies..." I fretted.
"You're a great fit." Aaron said, reaching into his bag and putting on his glasses. "I ran out of contacts, don't bully me." He said jokingly. I laughed. "What job do you want to have Ar." I called him by the nickname he hated. "Guard? Maybe then i'll be your guard if you get on the counsil." I smiled at the thought. "Then we can always be friends." He said pulling out a book.
"The match practice was stupid wasn't it?" I fretted to keep the conversation alive. Aaron smiled while reading. "They recomended me to marry an opal. They are very trusting." He said. I smiled because he didn't seem to sad about it.
"Guess what they said to me." I said. Aaron glanced up. "They said Rubies and Garnets should hate each other because we're to proud to be protected." Aaron laughed.

Backstory: When Kaira was 3, her house burned down in a terrible fire. Her father burned to death and her mother died on a hospital bed without finishing her last words. Kaira soon was adopted by her cousin Adam and his girlfriend Alesa. At school, however, she was constantly bullied. One of her most feared incidents happened when a bully tried to steal her amulet, a small silver dragon with wings outstretched and one sapphire eye surrounding a yin-yang symbol. She fiercely fought them off and from then on was feared by everyone except Rose, her best friend. When Rose was shot and killed during a robbery, however, Kaira became rather reclusive and spoke to no one. She eventually got help from a friend named Sam and has lived a happier life ever since.

Backstory: Cass was found on the streets at about five years old. No one knew where he came from, because no family was ever found. He didn't even know his name. The orphanage where he came from called him 'Cass', which meant 'lost case'. He ran away at the age of thirteen, so far from civilisation he didn't get a job tour until he was 16. He was given the nickname 'Wild-boy' by his colleagues and now works at the job tours showing people around.

Other/Backstory: Dawn has always suspected that there was more to life than just birthstones. She tries to fit into the Ruby stereotype, and does a good job of it, though she knows, hopes, believes there's more. She, just like the Ruby gem, is passionate and full of love, and every now and then is too proud for her own good. She plans on asking Faith, Aaron (who she likes but refuses to acknowledge the feeling since according to the city everyone has a specified match) and Safira if they might know if there's anything out there besides her city, and wants to become a Council member like Faith because she thinks that they know what goes on in the outside world.
