Chapter 17

"What did you say?! That's dung out of your mouth!" Ember suddenly retorted. Ferone was taken aback by her rudeness.

"Ember, just let him-" Blaze began, only to be cut off by Ember.

"That's stupid! Disgusting!" Ember spat, her claws scraped the ground rapidly - as if she were tearing a pelt apart.

Brincel looked concerned, rather than annoyed - to Ferone's surprise. "Alpha says he'll look for you when you've recovered." He continued.

A bigger shape moved from the corner of Ferone's eye, he had not noticed Vigille, the enormous grey wolf moving to Blaze's side. "I see, it shouldn't be long, these two are young - they'll recover quickly." He commented.

"Well, I'm as fine as hedgehog spines! Let's go now before the Spirit wolves lose their cool!" Ember growled, her eyes blazed with fury and anger. Ferone could almost sympathize with her, after all, she'd had her mother slain in the battle with the Parnes.

"She's already lost her cool," Ferone whispered under his breath.

"You still have mud all over your fur," Blaze commented, as if he was trying to comfort the angry she-wolf. Ember let out a furious snort as Blaze groomed her pelt.

Ferone suppressed an impressed sigh, Brincel next to him looked relieved as well. "We're going to go, erm... just get better soon," Brincel called over his shoulder as he turned his back, Ferone awkwardly followed, casting a glance at the three wolves.

"Ferone, come here." A gruff voice called from the other side of the clearing, which was unmistakeably Tyun's. Ferone let out a sigh, he has gotten so used to dreading training that he couldn't even complain anymore.

But there was a spark in Tyun's eyes this time, he flicked his tail as a gesture for Ferone to follow. "Bye." Ferone quickly dismissed to Brincel, who seemed slightly distracted.

"Good grief, any wolf would have enough time to shove you over the cliff." Tyun commented as he led Ferone up the slope. Ferone shot a glare at him. Mid-way Tyun abruptly turned to his right, facing a wall of pebbles Ferone had not noticed earlier.

"Now Ferone, get rid of those rocks." Tyun commanded. Ferone winced in confusion, he glanced at the wall of pebbles, there had to be something holding them in place, regardless of whatever was behind it.

Ferone hunched his shoulders and shoved the top of the barrier, only for more pebbles to rain over him, surprised - Ferone jumped back. Furious, Ferone knew that Tyun was probably trying his best not to laugh.

"Sometimes, you can't solve everything but pushing it forward." Tyun barked, Ferone held back a snort, he didn't want that coming out of Tyun's jaws.

Tyun gently brushed his paw against the wall of pebbles, before letting out a satisfied grunt - and after setting his paws down, reached forward with his teeth and pulled. A tendril emerged from the wall, and pebbles rolled down- revealing a pathway this time they didn't flop everywhere.

"How was I supposed to know that was there?!" Ferone retorted.

Tyun let out a sigh. "Small things can't come together without something holding them together, it's common sense, Ferone." He murmured before making his way through the revealed path.

Ferone pouted and followed him.

High rocky walls surrounded them, Ferone shivered as cold wind brushed his pelt, he'd never seen this place, and it was even more strange how no wolf noticed.

"The Parnes once attacked us through here, but there was a rockfall on the other side, one that served them good." Tyun explained. Ferone realised he had spoken his thoughts out loud.

"Oh. So why are we walking here now?" Ferone asked, a hint of disdain in his voice.

"Alpha finally came to his senses and instructed me to. There's a good place where we can practise fighting."

Excitement bit at Ferone's haunches, finally! They could do something other than rabbitting.

No sooner than Ferone could have said rat, a clearing emerged in front of them. Not as big as the new territory, but big enough to fit a dozen wolves.

"I can't believe we didn't come here earlier." Ferone breathed, his body shivering with anticipation.

For once, Tyun seemed to agree with him.

"Ferone, show me what you can do." Tyun commanded, his eyes glinted as he looked over his shoulder.

With a low growl, Ferone leaped for Tyun's shoulders, but the bigger wolf pivoted to the side and thumped his big paws on Ferone. Although Tyun attacked half-heartedly, it hurt.

"Ow!" Ferone winced.

"Silly pup." Tyun sighed. "Use your size to your advantage, half grown wolves should know that. Try again."

Ferone let a low growl, every word Tyun said managed to make him mad. But this time, Ferone took a moment to recollect his thoughts. Tyun followed his gaze as Ferone eyed his left side, and with a low growl, Ferone charged - at the last second, Ferone manoeuvred to the right, he ducked under the bigger wolf's belly and managed to land a scratch.

Tyun seemed surprised for a heartbeat as Ferone rolled back to the floor, panting. "Ferone, you may be a natural at this." He complimented.

Ferone felt happier than he should, it was almost hard to believe that the bigger wolf had bothered to say something nice for once.

"You still need more work for the battle tonight. You'll be no more than flesh with what you can do now." Tyun commented, the big wolf always seemed to find a flaw in everything Ferone did.

"Try something new." Tyun growled.

Ferone charged.
