Chapter 2.

Lucy begins her quest

I'm Lucy, I'm 17, and living on my own here in an apartment in Arche territory (southern France). I hand out newspapers, and help spread news between friends, and acquaintances so the owner, someone high up in the Arche gang lets me stay here for free. It's not a very good neighborhood, but good neighborhoods don't really exist anymore. I remember taking trips to Paris as a little girl. It was a long train ride away, but I loved the sights. I loved the Eifel Tower, but the fancy bakeries were my favorite thing. Now days a decent meal is one that comes frozen with no taste.
Mrs. Belcher next door is my only friend, but sometimes she can be a mom, sometimes she can be a sister, or even a teacher. Mrs. Belcher is a friend of my grandma. After my mom died after interfering in a gang fight my grandma went to Paris to arrange the funeral, but she never returned. My mom died when I was 14. My grandma left me hear saying she'd only be gone a few days, but she never came back. I told Mrs. Belcher the news, and she told me I could always come to her. She was always like a second grandma to me, and she treats me as the granddaughter she never had.
That's mostly the past. Now is the future. I want to be the new dictator. Mrs. Belcher was surprised, yet at the same time she didn't take me seriously. I would always remind her. "That's nice dear, but now don't you go getting into any scraps now". She would say with a warm smile. I remember one day I picked a fight with a couple of boys my age, but they got me good, and I arrived at her house all scrappy, fighting back tears. She bandaged my wounds, and cursed out the boys that fought me, at that moment I knew I needed to really step up my game.
"Job offer! Job offer!" I called out to the crowd in my slum of city. I'm on my job of handing out papers, and spreading news. A shy, blonde teenage girl about the same age as me walked over to me. She had a petite figure, big  eyes, and was very nervous. She was wearing an old looking, knee length, dark violet dress. The dress was sleeveless with an uneven bow on the back. "Hi I'm Alexandrine, I'm here about your job offer". ( Alexandrine is a French name meaning helpful).  I'm looking for people to join my gang, she isn't exactly very intimidating, or anything but I really need someone.  I thought for moment before saying another word. "Okay, you're hired!" The moment after I said that her eyes lit up. They turned from dull, lifeless, pools of blue to beautiful, gleaming,/ turquoise stars. She was quite charming. I need someone like that in my group. I can find the muscle somewhere else.
"Hey, I don't have any money to give you". Her smile disappeared after I said that, and I wasn't too happy either. "Um, but, your homeless right I can give you somewhere to live". I knew she was homeless, I've seen her many times on while I was on the job. Hopefully she would take my offer...
