It's dystopia like badwolf_divergent said. Dystopia is a distorted future, usually with a controlling power/government and a group of people trying to break free of their power. Hunger Games is another dystopian series.

K thanks cos I was pretty sure it wasn't sci-fi because that genre usually has like spaceships and planets and phasers and all that

Yeah, Divergent is definitely dystopian—society is strictly divided, and the protagonist fights against a controlling system. It actually reminded me of when I was trying to sort out some official stuff and found an easy way to manage everything through https://essutumishi-tz.com/. Made dealing with government services way less stressful!

I would call it Dystopian Fiction but if you want to keep it simple I would register it under Fantasy or Sci Fi.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!
It's considered to lie under action and adventure, with hints of romance (FourTris) and a one small act of horror (Edward getting stabbed in his eye with a butter knife)
