dr. jekyll and mr. hyde
i saw this on tumblr and got super excited because it seemed cool, so i picked it up at the bookstore and was kind of disappointed. the cover is ugly. the entire book is shorter than dorian gray, and half of it isn’t even the jekyll and hyde story itself. as short as it is i’m struggling to get through it.
its a cool concept but its just… not very good. the writing style itself is sub par. the characters are so boring. i didn’t even know what was going See More on at first because it feels so rushed, and it was SO PREDICTABLE. whoaaa! dr. jekyll was mr. hyde all along, shocker, absolutely nobody would’ve guessed. the hints are too obvious and the reveal is poorly written.

the picture of dorian gray:
incredible book all around. the plot isn’t dry, there’s a lot of drama. like a LOT. three male protagonists fling themselves onto furniture frequently. also oscar wilde’s writing is absolutely beautiful, morrissey was right about something for once.
there were a few times it bordered on being blatantly misogynistic but just because the writing is so good i can excuse it.
when it was first released this book was actually banned because it was one See More of the first gay novels prior to stonewall. there’s a whole like four page chapter that’s just one man confessing his love to another.
solid 10/10
