Happy Puppet Syndrome
Happy Puppet Syndrome
It was simple, we thought. Take a few chromosomes, slice them up, put them over there, and hey, perfect human being. I’m still not sure what went wrong. Maybe a miscalculation? A misprocedure? Or maybe something beyond our control. Who knows?

We (a few of my psychologist colleagues and I) were intrigued by human emotion. Anger, despair, euphoria. Was it possible to lock the mind into one emotion? To lock it into a euphoric state so that no sadness or anger would cloud its thought? Theoretica...

Cabin Fever
Cabin Fever
The Situation

Stranded in the middle of that colorless gray period that one gets in the deepest throes of winter, cabin fever was starting to set in. The only signs of life on the outside were the headlights of the drivers brave enough to take on the dangerous, otherwise dead, roads.

Natures makeshift bridges, made up mostly of broken tree limbs, fallen trees, and downed power lines were everywhere and posed a great threat to those stupid drivers who wanted to go Dog-knows where. Even more ...

Today, I drove my seven-year-old son James into town to go Halloween shopping. I didn’t have to buy any candy this year because we live in a cul-de-sac out in the middle of a farming community on the outskirts of the city. I moved last year because I had divorced my wife and lost my old house along with custody of James. It’s rather the shit-end of the stick, but James and I love Halloween. It’s one of the few times a year that Tracy finds it acceptable for my only son to ...

Ickbarr Bigelsteine
Ickbarr Bigelsteine
When I was a small child, I was terrified of the dark. I still am, but back when I was around six years old I couldn’t go a full night without crying out for one of my parents to search beneath my bed or in my closet for whatever monster I thought was waiting to eat me. Even with a night light, I would still see dark shapes moving around the corners of the room, or strange faces looking in on me from my bedroom window. My parents would do their best to console me, telling me that it was just ...

The Ritual
The Ritual
I don't think there's a college that doesn't have its share of legends. Stories range from the ghost of the girl who was pregnant with the football coach's child to the creature that roams a building at night. And everything is said to kill you in the most horrible fashion if you run into it, of course. My school, Miskatonic University, up in Maine, was no exception.

In addition to the obligatory ghost stories of the suicides and murder victims still haunting the grounds, there was a story ...

Animal Control
Animal Control
I work as an animal control officer in the North Texas area. It wasn't the job I had in mind when I graduated with my Bio degree, but then again I'm not really sure what I had in mind. The pay is better than any of the entry level lab tech jobs in the area, and it kept me working with animals. That's important considering I want to apply to Vet school. Experience can be that dividing factor that separates you from a horde of highly-qualified, highly-intelligent hopefuls that would do anything...

A Little Gift
A Little Gift
Before I begin to relay the details of this ritual, I should probably explain that you need to be in a certain state of mind for it to work. I'm sure a lot of you out there will know what I mean, even though I am not the best person to be explaining human emotions. It's a kind of churning, constant emptiness. A feeling that although you have no desire to die, life simply "takes too long" and you would rather another option. It is very important that you feel this way, when undertaking the rit...

The Midnight Man
I don't know where to start. Where to begin about my feelings of this "thing". This story is one that I have had to keep secret in fear that friends or family may persecute me and send me to a mental facility. What I have seen, what I have heard has been shot down by many as simple lies. This story hopefully will open the eyes to some who don't believe in my words of "it" and what it is.

Let me start off on a new note. The first time I encountered "it" was the late summer of 2008. My family'...
