chapter one

I woke when my sister Nikky pulled all my blankets off.  I tried to grab them but Nikky threw them all the way across the room.
"Hey!" I yelled. It was cold underground in the Dauntless faction and I had to leave.  I wasn't even scared of what my parents would say or do.  Nikky grabbed my arms and pulled me out of bed. I stumbled and fell into the wall and let out a sharp cry of pain. Now I know why she stayed - she was ruthless and brave, but all I am is a scared girl in a big, tall, body, or at least I was average for most Dauntless. My sister threw me a nice black shirt and ordered me to get ready. I rolled my eyes and dressed in a different black tank top and black shorts.  I didn't bother brushing my teeth or taking a shower; if I did then I would miss the bus to school. I ran to the pit and climbed up to the roof to fresh air.  I walked to the ledge where other Dauntless kids were on their way to school. I ran with all the others and jumped off the ledge, slamming my feet on the train floor.  I looked around and finally found my two best friends, Mako, from Erudite, and May, from Amity.  I sat down with them right in the middle. Mako smiled but May was too busy looking at the Dauntless getting in to pay attention to me, even though I was one of the Dauntless to jump in. Maybe she was looking at a guy when I jumped in, and she didn't notice me. I looked at where she was staring, but all I saw was a pack of Dauntless kids laughing and talking.  I turned to Mako.
"So today's the aptitude test!" Mako said.  I slapped my hand onto my forehead
"That's right! I forgot about that!" I said. I didn't know why I was panicking, but the fact that there was nothing to prepare us for this quiz might be why I'm panicking.
"You forgot? How could you forget?" Mako asked.
"I don't know, I guess I was just too caught up in our stupid homework to even think about it."
"Think about what?" May said, finally paying attention - kind of.
"The aptitude test." I said.
"Oh, right! I actually can't stop thinking about that!"
"Are you nervous?"
"Nervous? Are you kidding?" May smiled. "It's easy. I know I'm gonna get either Candor or Dauntless," May started to laugh. "Nervous..." She chuckled. Then she stopped and started looking back toward the Dauntless group.
"So what do you think you're going to get?" Mako asked.
"I don't know," I said. "Probably not dauntless, though." I sighed.
"Oh."
"What about you?"
"Amity," he said with a smile.
"Of course! Why did I even ask?" I said with a smile. He smiled back.
"What are you smiling at?" May said. Mako and I looked at her.
"Oh, nothing." I said. The bus stopped and everyone went out to school.
