chapter 7

*Mistuki's POV*
I stood there frozen in terror while H and Gina slowly shook hands. I chucked nervously as Gina eyed me suspiciously.
"Mitsuki..." Gina started to say slowly.
"Yes?" I managed to squeak out.
"Is this true?" Gina was now staring daggers into me while taking quick glances towards H.
"H-huh?" I stuttered.
While Gina was interrogating me, H headed to the kitchen.
Ignorant of the tension in the air H asked, "Hey where do you keep the dishes?"
Gina answered without taking her eyes off of me, "The cabinet above the sink. Cups are on the left of the dishes and the silverware are on the right side of the sink."
She then turned her full attention to me again and asked with a serious voice. "Why is he setting the table?"
I gulped "Ca-cause he just finished cooking and wanted to get everything ready for diner." I paused for a moment before quickly changing the subject, "So where's little bro anyways?" I asked.
"So he can cook huh? And what grade is he in? Why haven't I seen him around before?" My sis questioned without taking the bait.
"He's a senior in high school and um...well we just..."
"We just what?" Gina asked with an evil smile.
"I can't do this anymore!" I yelled at her.
H threw me a look of despair.
Gina started to laugh, "You almost got me Mistuki. Haha! I actually almost believed you!"
A look of bewilderment spread across H's face. I just chucked along with her. "Haha yeah almost got you."
She then wiped away a tear. "What a laugh. You and him dating. Haha. My little sis going out with someone for the first time and getting someone as perfect as him. Good looks, can cook and has a sense of humor."
I shot a pleading look at H to just go along with her. But once I caught sight of H, all I saw was anger and sadness in his eyes. I walked over to H and patted him on the back, letting out a forced laugh.
"Did you hear her H? She almost fell for it. We were so close to fooling her." I hit H on the back, signalling he needed to react.
H finally let out a cold and humorless laugh. "Yeah we almost got her." He said while staring coldly towards my sister.
"So who are you really?" Gina asked curiously.
"I'm just a stranger living in your basement." H coldly stated.
All I could do was gasp at what he said.
"You're joking, right?" Gina looked at me to show her we were joking again. I looked down not being able to meet her eyes then gave a small nod.
She then slowly sat down on the chair H took out for her. The color on her face slowly drain away. The cheerful attitude she had a second ago was completely gone. "I can't do this anymore. This can't be happening again." She whispered. She suddenly looked up at me and all I could see was that same scared girl from last year.
"I think I need a little time on my own." Was all she said.
All I could do was give her another nod and nudged H to follow me into the kitchen.
When we entered the kitchen, we sat down at the table and H gave me a worried look. "I'm sorry about that. I didn't think she would react this way."
"No it's okay. It's just that she's not very good with strangers anymore. Mostly homeless people." I replied.
H then gave me a confused look. I sighed again.
"I will explain later. Let me just calm her down." I stood up and started to leave the kitchen but H interrupted and stood in my way.
"I can make her forget she saw me." He whispered.
My eyes widened. "What? how?"
After what seemed hours H finally answered.  "I can alter peoples' minds. And other stuff."
"What? That can't be true." I insisted before continuing, "Then why were you so worried I would call the cops? Couldn't you have just made me forget I ever saw you?"
"Because..." H took a deep breath. "For some reason, I can't. At least not with you. The best I could do was cast illusions of shadows to scare you off. But that didn't work for very long." He confessed.
I stared at him for a moment, silently blinking.
"You're a tough person to scare, did you know that?" H muttered.
After a short period of silence, I realized that I had no idea who this boy was. And the worst part was that I wasn't afraid of him but instead wanted to comfort him. What did scare me was that I still wanted to stay by his side.
My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by my sisters' whimpers. At that moment I decided. I can't let my sis suffer anymore. If the best thing to do was to forget, then I would want her to forget. I looked over to H to show him I approved. "Just make it seem like she was joking around with me. Trying to get me into thinking she heard a ghost going down the stairs then went to lie down after she had her funny moment. And make sure she forgets she ever saw you." I said with a hint of sorrow in my voice.
H nodded and walked into the dinning room while I stayed behind. I couldn't bear to see my sister in that state. It sounded like the closer H got to my sister the louder her whimpers and whines got. At one point, all I could hear was her screaming my name for help. I covered my ears while I whispered to myself, "This is the best thing for her.". Her cries were then suddenly cut off. At this point I could handle the tension. I finally entered the room to find H carrying her.
"It's over now." H noticed my worried look, "Don't worry, she was in no pain. She was just freaking out, that's all." H reassured me. I gave a small nod in response and pointed to the door that led to her room.
"You can put her in there." I told him.
*After putting sis to bed*
Me and H sat at the table in the kitchen in silence, and I sorted out my thoughts as I stared out the window.
I finally realized that my lil bro wasn't here. "Oh crap, Gina didn't answer my question about Nike's whereabouts!" I exclaimed.
H answered calmly. "He's staying at a friend's house. Remember today, Friday, is the day of his friend's sleepover."
I can't believe I forgot about that. I thought to myself.
It wasn't long before it dawned on me: How did he know that?
Before I could ask him, he spoke up. "When I was rearranging your sister's memory I learned a bit more than I needed to."
We both went quiet again.  H eventually broke the silence with the question I was dreading to hear. "Can you explain to me what just happened with your sister?"
I took a deep breath, and began to explain to him both mine and my sister's past.

Great story! I recently had the pleasure of working with StellarWork https://stellarwork.ca/ - the waterproofing company in Toronto, and they did an excellent job of waterproofing my basement.
