Chapter 31

When I got to my English classroom, the line of people waiting outside were making their way into the room while the teacher stood outside. I joined the end of the line, and I followed them inside before taking my seat.

I got my pencil case out of my bag and put it on the desk, then I waited for the teacher to give everyone the work. After a few minutes, she put some questions on the board about different writing techniques, and I began to answer them.

I finished all of the questions quite quickly, probably before most other people in the class, as I usually did. Then I sat there and waited for everyone else to finish so that the teacher could put the next set of questions on the board.

Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jade and Emily laughing. I turned to look at them, assuming that they were laughing at me.

But instead they were looking at Mica.

I watched them as they kept looking over at him and laughing. I knew by now that whenever Jade and Emily laughed like that, it meant that they were going to make fun of someone. And it seemed that Mica was going to be their target for this lesson.

I suddenly felt scared, for both him and myself. They were going to pick on him, and I couldn't do anything about it. And they might have been going to ask him about me, so I was worried that they would make fun of me too.

They waited until the teacher was occupied with marking the books of the older kids, then they walked over to Mica's table.

"Hi, Mica." Jade said, trying not to laugh again.

He ignored them, carrying on answering the questions.

"Hello? Can you speak? Or are you ignorant like your ex-girlfriend?" she asked him.

As I heard this, I felt that same terrible feeling in my stomach. But I tried to ignore it as I listened to what awful things they were going to say to him next.

"What do you want?" Mica asked them, raising his head from his work.

"Oh, nothing. We just wanted to talk to you." Emily told him.

"We just really like you. And we think that now Victoria is out of the way, you should date one of us." Jade said, sounding as if she was going to laugh again.

The feeling in my stomach became more intense, and I felt as if I was going to be sick. What they had been talking about doing in PSHE this morning. . .they had actually done it.

"What if Mica agreed to dating one of them, and he really loved Jade or Emily?" I suddenly thought, feeling even more sick.

"It would be the perfect way to get back at her and make her jealous. You hate her, and we hate her. So why don't we do it?" Emily tried to persuade him.

"No." Mica told them simply.

"Why not?" Jade asked, looking confused.

"Because if I was with someone, I would want it to be someone who I actually love. Not a girl who just wants to use me to make other people feel awful." Mica snapped.

A wave of happiness washed over me when he said this. He loved me. And he didn't want to be with Jade or Emily, even though they were two of the most popular girls in the school.

"Fine. Be like that, then." Jade said, then she and Emily walked back to their seats.

Even though Mica had somewhat said that he loved me, I was hurt by what Jade and Emily had said about me, and I felt like crying. What had happened in this lesson had caused the suicidal thoughts to come back, and I was feeling even worse than I had done at lunch time.

I managed to get through the rest of the lesson with nobody saying anything else horrible about me, which was good. But the feelings were still there, and I felt sorry for Mica. It was all my fault that Jade and Emily picked on him, and that proved that I was an awful girlfriend even more.

When the bell went, I waited to be dismissed by the teacher, then I walked to Maths.
