The Gifted & Talented Program

When I was in elementary, at fourth grade, I remember being taken into a room for a test.  It was over definitions of words, about one hundred of them.  Got a 99.  I was one of the few who ever got a 99, apperantly.  We got taken out of class about once a week (twice for me because I was in the English and math GT program) to do basically nothing.

Also like the Special Education programs

There’s a huge problem of putting us in boxes and pushing out workers in public school.  Boiled down to 3 types:  “You can’t get anywhere because you’re not like everyone else”, “everyone else” and “if you don’t get anywhere important you’re a disappointment to the world,  because you’re not like everyone else.”   I’m gonna talk about “everyone else” and  “if you don’t get anywhere important you’re a disappointment to the world,  because you’re not like everyone else.” because that’s what I’ve been in.

Problem one with GT:  We have to stay.  We grow up with these people and develop trust with them, and get shoved into the same classroom away from everyone else.  We don’t get taught how to socialize with anyone else.  We’re expected to stay, from teachers, fear, or parents.  I left two years ago and everyone tells me I’m lucky I had the courage.  That’s always been terrifying.

Problem two:  People can’t be put in boxes.   Technically, I should have been in any of the groups- early in childhood I had frequent meltdowns from autism, i socialized with the kids in the average classes fine, but I’m smart enough to be in the GT classes.  I know people who are geniuses who don’t have enough work ethic to be in gt classes.  I know people in SPed who should be in gt classes.  I know people in gt who should be in average classes.   We can’t be mass produced to work when we have different learning styles, personalities, etc.
