Why do many countries in Asia end with -stan? e.g. Afganistan, Uzbekistan

Well, look at it another way. Why do so many European countries end in -land? England, Finland, Scotland, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, etc. -Stan means 'place of' as a suffix so it's just one of those things.
