First of all, I'm Jewish, so I'm looking at this from a Channukah perspective.
Homemade presents are better for older relatives (grandparents, aunts & uncles, etc.), whereas store brought presents are better for younger relatives (siblings, cousins, etc.)

It all depends on who it's for, what the occasion is, and what the person's interests are. For example, if somebody asked you for a video game then you really can't make it yourself. If someone asked for jewelry, you'd have a choice of buying it, or making it.

both. for a big present someone has wanted for a long time, store bought is probably better because i doubt you can make it.
but home made is good for a nice little gift you want to give someone (mom, dad, grandma, sister, etc.) to show them that you love them! :)
