Except charging means you would have to get close to the person.

No, you can charge with it. So you can run at someone with it at the ready, once reached using the charge, you stab them and one hit them, and no one gets up from it.

Bayonets mean you have to get close to the person so they're harder to use.

Well...The bayonet doesn't give it that much more dam, but you can charge with it, getting close and straight up stab them in the stomach and throw them off the end of it.
