Stardust is a filly created from a strange magical artifact that the "Children of the Night" found. It absorbed some of their energy, scanning their DNA. It used the DNA to create this filly who is a combination of all three. (They decided to give "dust" as the last part of her name because Moondust was the one who accidently activated the artifact.) Moonshine See More▼ took it upon herself to take care of Stardust since she is the mare of the group.
