Chapter 3.
The Fight

The Fight

It was another nice Greenleaf morning, and Amberpaw was dragging his paws as Ravenaster led him to the Great Oak tree. They'd be hunting there today, but Amberpaw rather be stuck in the Elder's den then hunting with his mentor. "Amberpaw keep up, we'll never reach the Great Oak if you're padding so slow" Ravenaster flicked his tail in annoyance. "I'd be glad if we never reached it" Amberpaw glared at the ground. Ravenaster growled, "Why do you have to make every training session an uphill battle? It's nearly been a moon of training you, and I'm about ready to tell Pebblestar that you're unfit to go to the gathering next week". "And I will tell him I'd be fit to go if I had a fit mentor" Amberpaw retorted, "Why can't Hazelspeckle have two apprentices?".
Ravenaster frowned but kept padding, obviously done with the argument. Amberpaw felt a spark light inside of him as he went on, "Chickenpaw learns stuff everyday, and she's way ahead of me! If I had Hazelspeckle as a mentor I would be on my way to being the greatest warrior". That got Ravenaster and the black tom turned towards Amberpaw, "Amberpaw there is one reason why you are so behind on your apprenticeship. And it's not because Hazelspeckle isn't your mentor. No, it's because of you. You are always complaining about me being your mentor that you don't let me teach, you don't let me take you out to training, and you make me send you to do chores everyday". Amberpaw opened his mouth to argue but Ravenaster beat him to it, "You won't be going to the gathering, and you will spend the rest of the day cleaning out the dens. Also just so you know, I am in control of your apprenticeship and I can make you an apprentice as long as I see fit". Amberpaw stood frozen as he stared at his mentor, Ravenaster met his eyes. "Go ahead" Ravenaster watched Amberpaw pad back to camp.
Amberpaw dragged moss to the apprentice's den, he wondered what his sister was doing. Probably catching her third mouse, and maybe moving onto fighting. Amberpaw shook the image out of his head, he was being hardheaded. He couldn't ignore the guilt knowing inside his belly. As he laid down a fresh new nest for his sister and him a video of the argument between his mentor played, and Amberpaw realized a few things.
One, Pebblestar was a good leader and there had to be a reason he gave Ravenaster as a mentor to him. Two, if he looked back on it Ravenaster really did try to be a good mentor but Amberpaw just didn't let him be. Three, Amberpaw had to make it up to Ravenaster.
