Capitalization

There are some words that should be capitalized, and some that shouldn't. For example, proper nouns should be capitalized. A proper noun is the name of a person, place, or thing. Examples are: Carla, Johnson Street, and the Statue of Liberty.

Also, the beginnings of sentences should be capitalized. Notice how I'm putting capital letters when I start a sentence. Examples: He sat in front of the fire. Basketballs flew in every direction.

Finally, the word 'I' should be capitalized. Examples: Wow, I'm so tired! Mom, I really hate algebra.

If you were saying "Pearl Drive," both the "Pearl" and the "Drive" should be capitalized. The name of the place is "Pearl Drive," not just "Pearl." Here are some example sentences:

"I asked brad if he liked me." Incorrect, because "brad" should be capitalized. It is the name of a person.

"I live on james Street." Incorrect, because "james" should be capitalized. It's part of the street name.

"It annoys me when i have to babysit." Incorrect, because "i" should be capitalized.

"My school is named Peterson Elementary School." Correct, because all three words in the name of the school should be capitalized.

"I love my mom." Correct, because you said "my mom," and a "mom" is a generalized term. You said you loved your mom. A mom is a noun, but in this case, it is lowercase.

"I love you, Mom." Correct, because you're talking straight to your mom. This time, you're being specific. You could have said "I love my friend's mom." and that would be correct, but if you're specific, then it's capital.
