Chapter 2.

"There" and "Their" and "They're"

"They're" stands for "they are." If you replace your "they're" with a "they are" and it makes sense, then you used the correct type of "they're." But "there" is referring to something being at a certain place. For instance, here is the proper use of "there.":

"Your jacket is right there." That is correct, because we're talking about the placing of the jacket.

Here's another proper use:

"There was a lull in the conversation." It's correct because we are talking about the lull being "located" in the conversation.

Here are some sentences with proper and improper uses of "there" and "they're" and "their.":

"Their shoes are here!" That's correct, because "their" is possessive. We are talking about someone's shoes, so it's their shoes. If we said "Their shoes are right there!" then that would be correct, also, because "there" is telling where the shoes are.

"They're you are!" Incorrect, because "They are you are!" wouldn't make any sense.

"Their is my laptop." Improper, because the "their" is not talking about someone owning something. "There is my laptop." would be proper because it talks about the placement of the laptop.

"Honey, I just called, and they're at the park." That is correct, because "They are at the park." makes sense. If you said "They're there, at the park." then that would also be correct.
