Mary-Sue - The Ultimate Guide

Mary-Sue - The Ultimate Guide

Based on every advice ever given, I believe I have conjured the ultimate guide to follow when creating an OC for any fandom, as Mary-Sue's exist everywhere. (There is still more to come, so don't panic if there is something left out. That just means it will be in a future chapter coming soon.)

Chapter 1.

Introduction - What is a Mary-Sue?

Mary-Sue.

Did you shiver at that word?
That's because you've encountered one yourself. Whether you have made one in the past, or have seen your fair share of them, you can't deny that these over-powered perfect fan characters are everywhere. There isn't one fandom that exists without one of these characters.
A Mary-Sue is a character created that was designed to be perfect at everything. These characters are generally female, so we'll use that for now. She is flawless in every way possible. Everything is her strength, she has multiple personalities, she is the centre Prophecy fulfiller of the fandom, and let's not forget that she HAS to have the most gorgeous and perfect looks that EVERY boy - including the antagonists - will fall for.
Oh, and the worst of all, their oh-so-TRAGIC backstory and how their lives suddenly become perfect when they meet the canon characters, and they become a Queen or a Goddess...

I am trying so hard not to burst into rage right now. It is taking every ounce of strength in me to control myself.
Why am I writing this again?
I'm writing this to show you all what you can do to prevent your own Mary-Sue characters, how to detect another, and what to do about them.

For these scenarios I present, I'm going to create a character from the back of my mind that is designed around each scenario.

Question:

What if for appearence, they have some of those attributes but make those realistic?

Such as, for females, they have huge breasts but when fighting it's a disadvantage, or, in general, they DISPISE them?
reply
Weiss_Schnee
Big breasts can be natural, or through plastic surgery, which is realistic. And it would hold them back, yes.
I suppose I do need to talk about appearances more.

FINALLY somebody made a story about this!! I give you kudos my friend, kudos! I'm so glad that you touched on relations between canon characters like romances or siblings. I think going off of romances with the whole "perfect relationship" thing, another issue Mary Sues have if it's an oc and canon ship is changing the canon character WAYYYY too much, to the See More▼

XD you're welcome!!! There's also the thing with hobbies, like how Mary Sues are good at absolutely any sport or anything they try. Some people are naturally good at things, but not everything. There's effort that goes into things, no one is naturally good at every possible thing. Mary Sues don't touch on putting effort into things, they're automatically good See More▼

Yep. Mary-Sue's aren't fun. At all. But hey, having blood relations to a canon character i.e a sibling to Sasuke, doesn't necessarily mean your character is a Mary-Sue or Gary Stu either. There are some pretty good non-Mary sue stories where this occurs. But that's beside the point. Anyways, other Mary-Sue traits include....Having multiple love interests, a perfect See More▼

True, but I will be separately talking about them too. I'm not resting until this guide is complete.

lol ok so since I know your little message at the top was about me

I'm not on anything. its all a matter of opinion that you can't understand, that's why it was on the "unpopular OPINIONS" page

I just think having an of related to a canon character is cringy but here you are, freaking out again because maria wanted to get pissy about it
reply
Weiss_Schnee
I'm pretty sure you weren't the first to say it, hence why I said it wasn't to you.
