Rainbow of Names

Rainbow of Names

The Title War ended 300 years ago, and since then, the system for naming children has been different. Until a child is five years old, it is simply called by a number. After the child turns five, it is given a name based on its personality. But not an ordinary name - a color name. Each personality is associated with a color. Children with the same color are put into the same class, where they learn the etiquette for that personality color. When they become adults, they choose a career out of the options available to that color. But when Blue, a 13 year old outcast, threatens the entire system by defying her class rules, everything is in danger of changing...

Chapter 4.

The Lesson

I slide into my seat just as Blue 480 begins talking.
"I got special permission from the Head to teach you this today," he announces. "In fact, every other Pupil in every other Class is learning the same thing right now. Today, we're going to talk about..." he pauses dramatically. "The Title War!"
All at once, people begin chattering. I hear things like, "What?" and "Whoa!" and "I don't want to learn about this.."
Blue 480 holds up his hands, and everyone falls silent at once. He smiles. "Thank you. So, the Title War... quite an interesting subject. I'm sure you all know what its general idea was." Silence. "But for those of you who don't, well, it was about the issue of names. Can anyone tell me what names were like before the War?"
Blue 502 raises his hand. "The names were very confusing, such as 'Alison,' or 'Mark,' or 'Sophie.' Mostly everyone had a different name. There were millions of names. And they weren't colors."
"Right," Blue 480 says. "Well, actually, a few people were named colors, such as 'Violet,' or 'Rose.' But they were named.... when were they named?"
The class collectively says, "At birth."
Blue 480 nods. "Yes. They were named these names at birth. No one had a number name. And their names didn't often fit their personalities. This led to conflicts. Deception. You see, when someone meets someone else for the first time, they don't know their personality. And when they don't know their personality, they don't know how to act around them, and they can also be deceived into thinking someone is nice, when really, they aren't. So people would sometimes get hurt, physically or emotionally, when these people seem nice and turn out to be mean." He stops for a moment. "These disputes evolved into battles, which merged together into one big war - the Title War. Some people wanted the naming system to stay the same. Some people wanted the deception to stop. The people who wanted the deception to stop won the war. After the war, when babies were born, they were given a number. The first child born after the war was named 1, the second was 2, the third was 3, and so on. They were called this until they were five years old. By then, the parents could adequately know what the child's personality was. So they chose from sixteen names - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, Pink, Turquoise, Magenta, Black, White, Gray, Gold, Silver, and Brown. Each color represented a certain personality. Red was active and passionate. Orange was social and determined. Yellow was logical and creative. Green was generous and practical. Blue was honest and peaceful. Indigo was intuitive and spiritual. Violet was emotional and compassionate. Pink was loving and sensitive. Turquoise was ambitious and idealistic. Magenta was unique and imaginative. Black was power-hungry and insecure. White was independent and simple. Gray was conserved and reliable. Silver was insightful and open-minded. Gold was charismatic and optimistic. Brown was comfort-seeking and steady." Blue 480 paused to take a deep breath and let that sink in. "Does anyone here know what that new naming system did?"
Blue 502 was the only one to answer. "Because everyone was taught what each color symbolized, when you met someone with a certain color name, you knew immediately what their personality was."
"That is correct," Blue 480 glanced at the DigiClock. "But it seems we've run out of time. We'll continue our discussion tomorrow. Have a good rest of the day, Blue Class - and remember what I taught you."

Main Problem:

NO ONE fits into just ONE of these personality types.

But I still love the story.

Thanks!

And I know that no one fits into just one, but the "Head" (rulers of the society) kind of make them act only a certain way. Plus, the TraitFood enhances their color's personality traits.

Wait...

So basically, she's been mistyped and needs to be moved to Turquoise. Simple. I don't know why this is a problem. :3

Also... It's against the rules of a personality type to be susceptible to cold...? That makes no sense at all.
reply
ELINAviolets
I don't think that's it :3

About the Turquoise thing. I kinda just imaged it as a seprate mall you can't enter since your personality is not the same colour as the mall and even if you entered instead of dollars they use euros.

And that thing with the cold. What if red was really weak against heat, that would probably also be very weird in that messed up humanity See More▼

And even though I'm critiquing, I hope that it's clear that I absolutely LOVE this story. That's the reason why I AM critiquing, actually. XD

I know; I've seen the Giver (but unfortunately have not read it yet). Except that this society is really nothing like the Giver. The point of that one was to erase all emotions and personality in order to make everyone equal and bring peace. It's kind of like the Amish people, except that the Amish don't use technology. THIS is a completely different thing, where See More▼

@Rebel_Fangirl it's supposed to be a dystopian society, kind of like the Giver.

**IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK "THE GIVER" DON'T READ BELOW**
In the Giver, there's no color, the weather is controlled, and everyone has to take a shot of medicine before they leave in the morning. Also, in the Giver, when you get old, you're "Released," which basically means See More▼

Yup. But that just means that whatever test that they take to be categorized is innacurate, and needs to be updated.

Sorry, Imma geek. >.<

@Rebel_Fangirl
Ai, I get what you mean

maybe she has some of the strong 'blue' personality causalities and has been 'categorized' as one of them.

but seeing them as an alien race wouldn't be bas, it might make it more interesting. maybe in the future they meet humanity or somethin :3

I know, but she's apparently been typed as a Blue when she's clearly not. Why should she conform to those rules if she belongs in Turquoise or something? It defeats the entire purpose.

Personality types have literally zero to do with skin and how our bodies handle different temperatures. If this is an alien race and the rules for that are different, than I'd See More▼

I really like it :3

The heroine is 'breaking' the barier of ideas and ways of looking upon oneself and expanding it.
The only thing I want to say to keep in mind is that I hope you make her realise 'on time' that she needs alies and real friends to reach her goal

But I really like this cool idea and hope you'd continue it :D
It's weird how 'original' this is See More▼

AWESOME

Although I find a few problems with the society. Psychologically, these kids wouldn't be developed enough to receive a standard personality trait until their late teens. Also, it's kind of just stupid to call everyone the same name. The kind of people who would create a "haven" like this would be giving each kid a separate name. Maybe one girl is named See More▼

Thanks! It's supposed to be like a dystopian society. And they don't feed everyone blue goop - the color of the food depends on your Color Class.
reply
vive_la_revolution
But it's still goop. I don't understand why they think anyone would eat that -- or why anyone does.
