Heirs of a forgotten world

Heirs of a forgotten world

In our days, in our time, legends that talk about fantastic creatures, magic, alchemy and mystic artifacts, are only that. Legends. Nothing more than stories, tales. But when an ancient threat returns from lands disappeared from the time, the legends must come true once again.

Chapter 4.

The journey begins. First steps to defeat fear?

"A sword... A young lady... A young lady with long silvery hair... He's talking but I can't hear her. What is this place? It seems like a great salon of a medieval castle. Am I dreaming? Uh? Hey! Turn the volume up, I can't hear ya."
<<Find the king... Protect him...>>
"The king? What? Who are you?"
<<Find the king. Protect him. Find me. A merlin will help you.>>
"What are you talking about?"
<<Trust the wolf. It'll guide you to the merlin.>>
"Ok, I shouldn't have eaten those berries."
<<Be quick. The Sidhe must not find me first.>>
"Ehm...the Sidhe must not find you? What am I doing, I'm talking with a mad girl in my dream."
<<The Sidhe must not win or our world will be destroyed!>>
"Ok ok, calm down-"
<<There is no time Kay. Find the merlin. Find the king. Find me.>>
"My name is Kaylee though..."
The young lady became a sword, luminous, everything went blinding enlightened, and Kaylee woke up.

Another sleepless night. After the attack of the Sidhe, Will was not able to sleep at all during night. Night after night after night, he could do nothing but to close his eyes and wake up instantly. He was becoming paranoid. During his guard shifts, every sound, loud or not, was a Sidhe, every movement, an enemy. Often he was being scared by Kaylee changing position in her sleep. He would calm only in his cousin's arms, those few times they could sleep safely thanks to Bigby being casually there. Even if that wolf scared him, he was glad it was there from time to time.
<<Will...? >> Kaylee said rubbing her eyes.
<<I'm here.>> He replied. <<How much we'll be able to hide in this forest, before the Sidhe find us?>>
<<Who knows.>> Kaylee stretched <<So, we go?>>
<<Where? There is nothing in this forest for what we know, the nearest city is the place we escaped from and it could still be plenty of damned Sidhe waiting for us.>>
<<Yeeeaah, but if we don't try we won't know if your pessimistic thought is true. And I'm quite sick of eating berries and mushrooms. I want some meat. So let's go!>>
Her optimism was starting to annoy him.
<<We can't keep going like this Kaylee.>> Will started as Kaylee started dragging him along. <<We'll do an error, we'll get caught and killed.>>
<<What are you talking about?>>
<<We need a hiding place where the Sidhe can't find us!>>
<<You're being paranoid.>>
A sound, coming from a bush, interrupted the cousins. Kaylee put herself between Will and the sound, resolute to protect him from...
<<Bigby?!>> The two of them exclaimed when the wolf came out of the bush, a rabbit in its mouth.
<<You scared us, you big bad wolf!>> Kaylee said hugging the friendly furry face, who showed to appreciate the hug wagging his tail.
<<It could come out this night... I could have tried to sleep...>>
<<Aah shush you grumpy.>> The voice of her dream suddenly spoke in her mind:<<Trust the wolf... It'll guide you to the merlin...>>
"Why did it came in my mind now... Could it be..."
In a misture of curiosity and incredulity for what she was about to do, Kaylee spoke to Bigby:<<Bigby, are you able to guide us to the merlin?>>
A single bark. It had understood her. The wolf turned back, and started walking ahead, leaving its dead rabbit on the ground.
<<Kaylee? What was that?>>
<<I had a dream where I was told to trust the wolf to find a merlin, I got curious.>>
<<And you trusted a dream?! Are you dumb?!>>
Bigby barked again, as to tell them to hurry.
<<Having seen what happened right now, yes. I trust the dream.>> Kaylee dragged the cousin to the wolf and the group moved.

They walked for hours, penetrating more in that unexplored part of the forest...
<<...seeing nothing but trees and this wolf's butt!>>
<<Will please, stop bragging. It's leading us in a forest, it's normal we see trees and its butt.>>
<<It's an idiocy. We should be hiding, not following it.>>
<<Since when are you this annoying?>>
Will turned his head and walked faster, getting close to Bigby without noticing it. What was happening, she trusting her dream, her optimism and her hope. He couldn't understand it. It was illogical, crazy and futile.
The Sidhe showed they're devastating, powerful and dangerous. They can't be defeated.
Bigby pushed its face against to Will's leg, and he suddenly woke up from his gloomy reasoning, and jumping back for scare.
<<Dammit Bigby! Don't scare me like that!>>
<<Come on Will. He was just trying to make you feel better. Asking for cuddles, ain't that true you enormous cub?>> Giggled Kaylee cuddling the wolf, who was wagging his tail happily.
Will sighed, and slowly reached Bigby's head with his hand, petting for the first time that large animal that scared him for all his life. He then proceeded to hug the giant wolf, and squealed in surprise finding his face prey of its tongue. Laughs filled the air, and Will's uneasy heart calmed down and relaxed.
<<You feeling better now? You little adorable paranoid?>> Kaylee hugged him.
<<Yes...>> He smiled.
<<Good! All you needed was a laugh! Come on, let's find out where Bigby is leading us. I'm getting very curious.>>
<<Alright.>>
And once again, they were walking in that unexplored forest, unaware of what they'll find in it, but not scared anymore of their guide.
