Chapter 3.

New To This (Chapter 3)

Cinderkit sat awkwardly next to Silverears.

Now that she knew that she wasn't her mom, she didn't know how to feel. She still loved her, of course, and Silverears loved her, but things grew... Awkward between them.

"Cinderkit? Are you awake?" Cinderkit rubbed her face with her paw. "Of course I'm awake, Silverears, I'm sitting right next to you at a clan meeting!"

Cinderkit had turned 6 moons today and was to become an apprentice.

She looked around.

"If you're looking for your mom, you're not going to find her." Silverears meowed calmly. "Why not? Doesn't she love me? Doesn't she want to see me become an apprentice?" Silverears smiled a little, but quickly shook her head and acted serious. She winked at the kit. "You'll see."

Cinderkit sat patiently and tried to pay attention to the leader, but it was all so boring.

"Yadda yadda yadda, gather under rock, blah blah blah, apprenticeship, et cetera et cetera...

"Can Cinderkit please come up?" She swiftly got up and padded over to her leader.

"Words words words, You will be known as Cinderpaw until you are a warrior. Your mentor will be Yellowclaw."

Cinderkit's eyes grew large. She tried to hide her excitement. Oh, StarClan! I'll get to work with my mom!

Yellowclaw climbed up to the top of the rock next to Cinderkit. They happily touched noses. All the cats cheered. "Cin-der-paw! Cin-der-paw! Cin-der-paaaaw!!!" She blushed. This was going to be epic!

~~Time Skip~~

Cinderpaw sat in the med den, rolling a mossball in her paws.

She tried to pay attention to her mentor—not to mention mom—but she just couldn't.

"Are you listening?" Cinderpaw snapped out of whatever daydream she was having.

"I, uh, um, yes ma'am." Yellowclaw smiled sweetly. "There's no one here, Cinderpaw. You can call me mom if you wish." Cinderpaw beamed.

"Ok, mom." She liked the way it rolled off her tongue. It felt so natural, not at all like the artificial sensation she felt when she called Silverears that. Yellowclaw tossed her a bundle of some sort of herb.

"What's that?" Cinderpaw asked. "I was hoping you could tell me." Her mother replied. "If you don't know what herb this is, how can you be expected to be a medicine cat?" Cinderpaw asked innocently.

Yellowclaw sighed and rolled her eyes. "I know what herb it is, I want to know if you know what herb it is." "OOOOH, why didn't just say so? It's, uh... Catmint?"

Yellowclaw tried to hide her disappointment. "It's coltsfoot..." "Oh..."

"Ok, rough start, but I'm sure you know what it does... Right?" "Yeah, it stops bleeding!"

"No, sweetie, that's cobweb. Coltsfoot helps with short of breath." She meowed through clenched teeth. "I'm new to this, ok?" She sighed yet again. "Why don't you get some rest? Being an apprentice can be hard."

"YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! THANKS, MOM!" She licked her cheek and ran to her den.

Tommorow would be a busy day.
