Chapter 8

The next day at school, I walked into my form room as usual. I went over to my seat and put my school bag under the table, then I sat down next to Mica, who had already arrived.

"Hi, Victoria." he said, smiling at me.

"Hi." I answered, smiling back.

"Last night was fun." he said.

"Yeah." I replied, remembering the events of last night.

"I'm glad we're dating now." he said quietly.

"Me too." I said.

Then one of the girls on another table turned round and stared at me.

"Oh my gosh! I actually heard her speak!" she exclaimed, clapping her hands.

I immediately stopped talking to Mica and looked down at the table, feeling horrible and embarrassed. Why did people always act like hearing my voice is the most rare and special thing in the world? And why did they always feel the need to announce the fact that they heard me talk to the whole class?

"What? You heard her speak!?" another one of the girls asked, staring at me.

"Yeah!" the girl who heard me talk said, then they came over to my table.

"Can you say hello to us, Victoria?" the other girl asked me.

I started to feel really uncomfortable. Tears welled up in my eyes as I tried my best to ignore them. I hated it when people tried to force me to talk to them. Why couldn't they understand that I don't speak?

"Victoria? Are you deaf or something?" one of them said, laughing.

"Leave her alone. Why are you making such a big deal about hearing her voice?" Mica said, interrupting them.

"Because she never speaks. It's so weird." the girl said.

"And how does that affect you?" Mica asked.

"It doesn't affect me. But it's strange." she replied.

Mica looked as if he wanted to yell at her, but then the teacher clapped his hands.

"Jade and Emily, go back to your seats." he said.

The two girls, who I assumed were Jade and Emily, went back to their seats, glaring at Mica and I. I was still quite upset after what had just happened, and I felt awful.

"Are you okay?" Mica asked me, sounding concerned.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I said, even though I was on the verge of tears.

"You don't sound fine to me. You sound like you're going to cry." he said.

"No, really. I'm okay." I told him, trying to stop my voice from shaking.

"Well, okay then. But if you're ever upset about anything, just talk to me about it." Mica said.

I nodded, but I probably wouldn't tell him about my problems. I don't want to bother him with things that don't matter, and I don't want him to waste his time trying to help me.

Then the bell went, and I walked with him to our first lesson.
