Chapter 3.

Chapter II

Vigilantly, Fern snuck into the humble kitchen area of her home, Riverwood Drive. Stealthily turning the knob on the door, she crept in. She didn’t want to make any loud noises because she assumed -by the soft inhales and exhales coming from the master bedroom- her mother was asleep.  She silently walked through the winding corridors until she came to a small white door with the shape of a leaf whittled into the oak. Fern pushed the door open and went into her room. There, she could make as much noise as she liked, because the thick wood absorbed most of the sound Fern made. She walked over to a hard spruce piano with ivory and ebony keys. Most of her time at the piano, Fern opened the top so she could look at how the complex insides of the instrument worked. Today though, she just thought she’d play a normal, laid-back piece. Fern thought for a moment, considering which piece to play. Finally, she exhaled loudly and started playing. The magical notes of the piano lingered in the air as the young elf’s fingers spidered over the keys, triggering the hard wooden hammers hidden inside the oak. The hard base of the old grand piano stifled the intense pings of the strings concealed within, as Fern had observed so many times before. Softly, as she picked up the rhythm and tempo, Fern began quietly singing along. Her father had sung this song numerous times in the past and she had memorized the lyrics as a memory of her guardian.

“Do you wish to sail
Far away
Where the boats
All dock
At lullaby bay
Where the campers gather
'Round the fire
Everyone here
Has a desire
Where the butterflies flock
As they kiss the dew
From flowers
That have gone askew
At lullaby bay
You can find a nice breeze
At lullaby bay
You can do as you please”

As Fern finished, she sat in a thoughtful silence. She was starting to get tired. She looked out a small window and saw that the moon was just passing the olive tree in her backyard. Since she didn’t have any way of telling time, Fern always observed where the sun and moon were in the sky, in variation to the tree. Right now she presumed it was about 8:00. She sighed and got up. Fern trod quietly to her bed, pausing to observe herself in the mirror. Her dark brown hair floated down to just below shoulder height. She had brown eyes and pale lips. Her long elf ears reached almost equal height to the top of her head.Fern brushed a bang of hair out of her eye and turned away. Since she was too tired to get undressed, she just stripped off her boots and gloves and lay down into her bed. As she drifted off to sleep, Fern thought of lullaby bay. She had no idea of what was to come, but it certainly wasn’t anything like that.
