Chapter 3
We sat in a circle on the field we were at earlier, trying not to stand up. It was an old game we would play: Sit down and don’t get up for any reason whatsoever. And why am I saying this? I don’t know. I really don’t. “Shoot, she’s coming,” Shirley whispered.
“Damn it!” Snake said. “Someone go drive her away.”
Of course I volunteered.
“Angelica, can’t you just leave us alone?!” I said.
“Nope!” she said in her fake-sweet voice.
“We need our space! No one invited you!” Yes, I may have sounded mean, but it’s not my fault she has no friends.
“I hate you,” she said.
“So WHY do you keep trying to hang out with us?!” After that she just flounced off.
“When the end of the world comes, she’ll still be standing here like a dummy!” Devon muttered.
“Perra,” Alex muttered. I snorted.
‘C’mon, you guys, cheer up. Britsé is going to appear at the school social here.” I smiled.
“We don’t go to this school…” Snake muttered
“So? Tricking hurts no one.” Devon bit his lip.
“Except for us……..” Shirley muttered.
You see, us Fairy Hunters had a special connection to this school. Brittany and Shirley go here, and every once in a while, we tricked the teachers into thinking we went here too. But the Social? Tougher. They were going to take pictures of us, and we’d be eating (that’s actually a big deal, because any crumbs left behind are clues to the fairies) and of course, with Devon and Brittany together, they could also track ‘mortals with the Sight’ (as if they aren’t a big threat).
“Shhhhhh,” Snake said. “I see an elf.” I immediately scrambled backward. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, they’re elves. Disgusting creatures. Devon picked it up by the shell and smiled at me.
“Don’t you da —“ but my sentence was cut off. He flung the thing at my face.
“Where’d it go?” Alex called.
“Behind me,” I said as I slapped Devon. Shirley smiled.
These were the sort of things that happened every day. But that was before they took us.
