I’ve been writing short stories on my lunch breaks, usually at the diner near my office. For me, a good story starts with characters you care about, especially when mixing romance, death, and adventure. I like grounding the big emotions in small details. I was recently researching a small-town setting for a piece and ended up deep in local newspaper archives, at one point I even stumbled onto https://www.pissedconsumer.com/company/winston-salem-journal/customer-service.html while See More trying to access old issues. It reminded me that real people and real frustrations make the best fiction. Focus on honest moments, and the plot will follow.

A good story makes readers care about the characters first. Give them goals, fears, and difficult choices. Romance adds emotion, adventure keeps excitement moving, and loss or death raises the stakes. Focus on creating feelings and tension instead of trying to make everything perfect. The best stories feel honest and alive.
