Maybe if he just put the Pikachu in a box, released it, or AT LEAST convince it to evolve so it doesn't get beat up as much, then he'd have slightly better teams, if he replaced it with a stronger Pokemon.

Well I don't see that happening. Ash and Pikachu are close and Ash wouldn't do such a thing with Pikachu.
