But if they're fusions, they could be Death Scythe fusion. That would explain why they can shape-shift (Form Manipulation) and the gem part might be where the souls connect the best. Sid-sensei said all Weapons have a blade lying dormant within their souls. That's why the Gem's weapon comes from the gemstone. That's where the souls are closest.
