Chapter 13.

13

Roger's gaze swept over the barren campgrounds. The smell of burnt wood still hung heavy in the air, replacing the scent of blood and decay he was so sure he'd smelled earlier. Strangely enough, almost every soldier was asleep. They weren't dead. They were all safe and sound.
Alex pulled Roger close, eyes twinkling with concern.
"Roger? Are you okay?" She gazed upon the drowsy man as he blinked to clear his vision.
A small nod was all Alex received.
He must've had a nightmare.
Poor thing. Alex had experienced plenty of nightmares in her life. But she never remembered Skye to be this way. Skye was usually so calm and quiet. She could sleep through a hurricane, or as a dog trampled atop her sleeping body. She wasn't typically sensitive to night terrors.
Then again this wasn't Skye.
It was Roger. Skye no longer existed. And Alex was okay with that.
But Roger turned out to be much more emotional than Skye had ever been.
He let Alex know by collapsing into her arms, bawling.
Oh god.
Alex had never seen a soldier cry. She'd never seen this person cry. She had no idea how to bring comfort to the blonde as he trembled and wept in her arms
After a few minutes of tears, Roger looked up just enough to speak.
"He's coming. He's coming and we can't stop him...."
The woman clutched Roger as he began to let out all his emotions. It was quite strange. Then it hit her.
He couldn't keep these emotions hidden forever.
The shaking sobs that escaped Roger's parted lips and the crystalline droplets that continued to stream down his face were the tears of seven years.
How the hell did he old back for so long. Alex gazed upon his convulsing figure. His chest heaved with everyhis breath as he tried to control his emotions.
And what happened next shocked her even more.
