This is pretty standard wandlore, the same as used in Harry Potter. Because it is useful in fantasy writing, I have put it on Qfeast.

Cores

Almost any magical animal can produce a core, but some are more common than others. In theory, you could make up your own core using something from fantasy creatures of your own creation.

Ashwinder eggshell: strong-willed, not very subtle
Augury feather: intuitive, good at divining
Billywig stinger: capricious, laidback
Cherub hair: emotional, helpful
Diricawl feather: subtle, evasive
Doxy wings: temperamental, mischievous
Dragon heartstring: powerful but overwhelming
Erkling darts: charismatic, offensive
Fairy wings: passive, airy, friendly
Fwooper feathers: sensible, persistent
Graphorn skin: the most powerful defensive core
Hippogriff feather: stable, proud
Kappa scale: mischievous, open
Kelpie hair: capricious, temperamental
Kneazle whisker: intuitive, defensive
Mooncalf heartstring: patient, subtle, good-hearted
Phoenix feather: most versatile core known
Ramora scales: helpful, intuitive
Sphinx whisker: creative, either extremely reserved and cautious or careless and headstrong
Unicorn hair: gentle, subtle
Veela hair: temperamental, crafty
