Chapter 4.

Claude and Linhardt

“Heya Linhardt.”

The book he had been using as a pillow was disregarded when Linhardt looked up to see  Claude, standing over him. “What do you need?” He said, his temper short as his nap that Claude had just woken him from.

Claude leaned back and frowned, looking away dramatically. “You do wound me, you know!” He dropped back to a regular look. “No, I was actually wondering if perhaps you’d care to join me shopping in the marketplace.”

“No.” Linhardt laid back down in the comfort of his arms on the library desk.

“I’ll let you study my Crest.”

“It’s a deal, then. Why didn’t you say that in the first place?

“So, Claude,” Linhardt looked over to the man he was addressing, “why did you invite me of all people along? Dare I say that even Hilda’s a harder worker than I am.”

Claude chuckled. “That’s a bold statement to make.” He didn’t even look away for a moment from the arrow he was holding. “Well, I don’t think it’s too outrageous that I’d want to get to know the newest Golden Deer. Y’know, try to see what the Professor saw.”

“Hmm.” Linhardt didn’t care enough to pry more into that answer, and so he took it as it was given.Of course Claude would be reluctant to say much when in such a public place.

The heavy sun beat down on them like the gaze of the merchant behind the counter. “You gonna buy them, or are you just going to drool at it?”

An odd way to refer to an arrow, Linhardt thought.

“Yeah, I’ll take them.” Claude passed the merchant however much gold and tossed the bundle of arrows tied with twine into the sack that Linhardt had convinced him to ‘do the honors’ of carrying.
