Chapter 5.

Just Like Mom (Chapter 5)

Cinderpaw sat at the fresh-kill pile with Yellowclaw. She drew in the sand, leaving her mouse untouched. Her mother became worried.

"What's the matter, my dear?" She asked. "Oh, what? Nothing." She said, continuing to not eat. "Oh, something's wrong." She said. "And I'm not gonna stop until you tell me."

"Well, you know, it might just be because the cat that raised me for most of my life got banished for trying to KILL ME, but that's just a theory." [A GAME THEORY!]

"Yeah... I don't know why I trusted her, but I swear that I'll-" "You'll what? Find a better nanny next time you abandon your kits? Is that just what you do, do you hate kits?"

Yellowclaw was taken aback. "No! I did it because it was against the warrior code for me to have you! I couldn't tell anyone I had kits, or they'll... Who knows what they'll do..."

"You said kits. Like plural." "Yeah, so?"

"Did I have a sibling or something'?" She asked. Yellowclaw was shocked. She laughed. "You really are too clever for your own good. Yes, you had a brother. I was going to name him Silverkit, after that wretched Silverears... But he... Didn't make it..." She said, tears streaming down her fur. Cinderpaw put a paw on her shoulder.

"It's ok, mom. I forgive you, I really do!" She smiled weakly. "Thank you, honey. Now why don't you finish up your mouse and come with me to train."

"Ok, mom."

~~Time Skip~~

Cinderpaw sat in the med den, listening intently while her mother taught her about all the different herbs.

"And marrow-"

"YELLOWCLAW!" Brokenarrow meowed, bursting into the med den. "Yes?" She replied nonchalantly. "IT'S RAINBOWBREEZE! SHE ATE SOME TWOLEG TRASH AND SHE'S CHOKING!" "I'll be right there! Hold down the fort for me, ok Cinderpaw?" "Yes... Yellowclaw." "Good." She ran off with Brokenarrow, leaving Cinderpaw alone.

She started to put some of the herbs, reciting their names and abilities to herself.

"Coltsfoot is for breeaaath-ing. Cobweb is for cleaning blooood. Catmint can heal greencoooouuugh. Chew up chervil root, don't let in any mud.

"Incaseofinfection."

She laughed to herself, putting away the herbs and singing to herself.

Her mom soon came back talking to Broken arrow.

"... And I'm saying you need to keep a close eye on her! Ever since she bumped her head when she was a kit..." Her voice trailed off as she started pulling out the herbs Cinderpaw had so carefully put away.

She was muttering to herself.

"Dandelion leaves? No. We need thyme. Thyyyme... Ah, there we are. Now we need honey. Honey, honey, hoooneeey... Ok, good good, now let's see..." And so on, until she couldn't carry anything else. "Hey, Cinderpaw?"

"Yeah?"

"Can you take this for me?" She gave her a leaf with honey on it. "Uh, ok."

They walked out of the den and to Rainbow breeze, who was having a little panic attack. Yellowclaw helped her with ease.

Cinderpaw was impressed. She watched her mom do this sort of thing before, but this was incredible! She decided she wanted to be just like her someday. She can do it...

She knows she can.
