The Trustworthy Dog

In the old house, lived the Bayer family: little Alfy, his mother and father, and Ruby, the dog.
One cold October evening, the wind is howling, and there’s no one on the streets. Alfy and Ruby are lying next to the fireplace. When Alfy’s mother ran into the room, they were still sleeping.
“Dad just called”, she said. “He’s at work, but he forgot these important documents. He’all need those. That man can remember nothing!”
Alfy looked at the documents, where were complicated diagrams, copies of ID cards, and long texts. He can imagine, how worried is his father. The boy hugged Ruby, then stood up.
“I will bring the documents to him”, Alfy said. “His office is not that far away. It will not be long.”
“I don’t know,” his mother thoughtfully said. “It’s getting dark outside, I don’t want you to get lost. Maybe take Ruby with you? What if.”
“Ruby?” Alfy laughed, looking at the old, tired dog.
“No.”, he decided. “Ruby needs to get some rest. I went to dad’s office many times. I’ll be fine.”
“Then put on a hat.” Mother said.”It’s really cold, I don’t want you to be sick.”
“Don’t worry,” Alfy answered, taking the hat. “I’ll be back soon!”
He carefully put the documents in his bag, and closed the door.
It was dark. Even with the street lamps. Alfy looked at the dark sky, then at his home, so warm and  comfortable. But dad needed these documents, so he continued walking.
After a little while, Alfy saw a shadow with the corner of his eyes.
At first he thought that was just a shadow of a house, or perhaps a rat.
But when Alfy turned, he saw a shadow moving again. It was big and black. He was terrified. “It’s just my imagination.” Alfy said, almost hugging his bag. He went on, thinking about the movie he watched yesterday, where were those funny pirates. Everything is ok.
No really. He heard someone or something was breathing loudly.
Alfy started to sweat.
“It’s just the wind.” He murmured. “I’ll be at dad’s office very soon. The faster I go, the faster I’ll be back home.”
But he heard something again. This time it was the sound of sniffing. Alfy tried to think about the movie about the pirates. But he heard the sniffing again, and this time he saw the shadow again.
“Come here! I’m not afraid of you!” Alfy tried to be brave. A black dog came and licked his face. That was not any black dog. It was Ruby.
“Oh, Ruby! You scared me to death!” Alfy laughed. “I’m so embarrassed that I thought it was a ghost!”
But something wasn’t right about Ruby. She looked so young, not the old, tired dog lying next to the fireplace. Ruby wigged her tail, wanting Alfy to follow her. Alfy forgot about the documents and followed his dog.
Ruby was leading him to home. When Alfy reaches his house, he discovered that it is burning. His mother is standing outside.
“Mom! What happened?” Alfy cried. “The house started burning! I’m so glad that you’re here! I can’t do anything alone!” His mother said.
“You should say thank you to Ruby, who brought me here.” Alfy said. His mother looked horrified. “I’m so sorry, honey, but Ruby died, after you closed the door.
“That’s not possible! I was following her! Look, she’s...” Alfy stopped. Ruby was gone.
