chapter 2

Woosh, woosh.  The wind brushed against my bare arms, causing me to shiver.
I should've brought a jacket, I thought as I stood in front of the entrance of the basement surrounded by snow. I stood there for a few freezing minutes.
I really didn't want to go down there. The basement seemed creepy to me, but once I thought about it, the whole house was just a ball of creepiness.  My house was as unusual and old as a house could get. First, my house wasn't a house but instead, it was several small dilapidated apartments put together. The basement used to have a few doors with numbers on them, yet there wasn't a door that led in from the inside the house anymore. The only door for the the basement was the one outside and it was never locked. Anyone could just walk in and stay in there, just like in my dream. It seemed that the idea of having apartments failed since it eventually ended up as a house.
"Well I guess it's time. I can't avoid going down. Wish me luck." I whispered to no one in particular.
Creak. The door groaned when I slowly pushed it open. I quietly crept closer to the opening and took a quick peek inside. Nothing was in sight.
"Phew, that wasn't too hard. Now all I have to do is grab the clothes and run as fast as I can from this creepy place." I muttered to myself as I slowly advanced, putting one foot in the front of the other. After a minute or so I took another and so forth.  After about 5 steps, I stopped and felt proud of the process I had made within 15 minutes. Suddenly, I felt something run past me. Frightened, I let out a loud squeal.
"Oh my cupcakes!! Are you trying to scare me to death, or make me pee my pants, because I think you just accomplished both in one second!"  I yelled at my 7 year old brother, who kept running up and down the stairs.
"Big sister says to hurry up or we won't leave you anything to eat!" He said, not taking into account anything that I had just said.
"Uh...okay, but stay with me, I'm scared." I whispered, afraid that he would make fun of me.
"Geez, sis, I thought that you were the one that had to protect me, not the other way around. Don't worry I will protect you, little sis." he held out a small fist and gave me a big grin.
"Did you just call me little sis? And also I just love what you did there with your fist. You remind me of Naruto...wait...have you been watching my DVD's without me knowing?" I said while roughing up his hair.
"Maybe..." He said, grinning. I grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
"Okay, I'm ready." I said with confidence.
We continued going down the stairs and finally reached the bottom. "Oh my cupcakes, this is so creepy. I have to get out, now!" I tried to run back upstairs, but my brother tightened his grip on my hand and wouldn't let go.
"Come on sis, we are finally down here. let's just get the clothes and get it over with." He said with a slight tremble in his voice. I looked down at him and noticed his big eyes looking around cautiously. I smiled sadly.
He's as scared as me, I thought as I felt him squeeze my hard a little harder. I should at least show him that I'm brave, I thought. I slowly relaxed and observed  my surroundings. There was a long hallway that connected the laundry room to the entrance and right in the middle of the hallway was another hallway. It wasn't too long, though it connected to two more rooms. One of the rooms had a backroom that you could only access if you went into the first room, it didn't have any other entrance. I always hated that small hallway because if you stand right where it begins and if the door of the first room is open then you can see the backroom. It's the creepiest view ever. I felt like if I kept staring, something would pop out.
"Come on." my brother murmured while gently pulling me to the laundry room. I tightened my grip and moved in front of him. I wasn't about to show my little brother how scared I was.
After a bunch of shrieking and complaining from both of us, we finally completed our mission of getting the clothes and started making our way to the entrance. I sweat dropped, knowing full well that my little brother thought I was a scaredy cat.  Then all of a sudden my little brother let go of my hand and ran ahead leaving me all alone with a basket full of clothes, in the dark creepy basement.
"I'm sorry, sis. It's too scary!" He yelled as he ran away.
"Hey, get back here!" I shouted in a panic. I stood frozen in terror. I had realized that when I yelled to my brother I had stopped right in the middle of the hallway where it opens up to the other hallway. "The creepy spot," I would call it.
"Don't turn and look!" I kept repeating to myself with my eyes closed. I started feeling my body turning to face the entrance or the small hallway. After a few minutes, I finally opened my eyes. I sighed in relief. There was only the door to the room that lead to the back room open. "Ha, nothing can scare me!" I yelled, a mocking tone evident in my voice. Suddenly I saw a shadow abruptly cross the backroom.
"Oh Scheiße!!! *Scheiße is the German word for shit* I dropped the clothes and ran as fast as my legs could carry me upstairs, through the kitchen, and straight to the bathroom.
"What are you doing? Hurry up and get out here so we can all start eat...wait...did you leave the cloths downstairs?!" My sister yelled through the door.
After many attempts and bribes with bacon to get me out, she finally pried the door open and dragged me out. A few minutes later and a few crazy stories of shadows in the basement, she stated in the calmest voice I had ever heard, "You better get up here with the clothes or you will not have any food until you do so." Then she turned and walked away, knowing that I would have to go down or starve.
I turned to the food on the table, drooling at the slight of the bacon. I quickly snatched a few pieces and shoved them in my pocket. As I felt my pants absorb the grease, I cringed. I grabbed a napkin and quickly placed each piece on it and folded it carefully, then placed it back into my pocket. I then proceeded to the back door filled with confidence and pockets filled with bacon.
"Nothing can stop me." I mumbled with a smile.

Great story! I recently had the pleasure of working with StellarWork https://stellarwork.ca/ - the waterproofing company in Toronto, and they did an excellent job of waterproofing my basement.
