Chapter 10
At lunch, Mica and I decided to stay in the canteen. We couldn't risk being found and getting picked on again. People would probably make fun of us in there, like they usually did, but at least it wouldn't be as bad as the incident at break. We walked into the canteen and sat down at a table away from the other people in our year. I reached into my school bag and pulled out my lunchbox, and Mica stood up.
"I'm just going to buy lunch, okay? I'll be back in a minute." he said.
I nodded, and he went to join the queue of people waiting to get lunch. I stayed sat in my seat, eating my tuna and sweetcorn sandwich. I suddenly felt scared that people would see me and come over to me. If anyone made fun of me, it would be worse than what happened to me at break because Mica wouldn't be there to stand up for me.
Just then I heard laughter from the other side of the room, followed by a shout of, "Hey, Victoria!" I turned round and saw Jade and Emily looking at me. I immediately turned back round, hoping that they would leave me alone.
"Hello? Victoria?" Emily called in a sing-song voice.
I didn't answer her. I kept staring down at the table, trying to ignore her. I started to feel sick, and I wished she would just go back to talking to Jade and stop picking on me.
"Oh my gosh, she's so ignorant." I heard Jade say.
"Yeah, I know! She never answers us when we try to talk to her." Emily said.
"No wonder she doesn't have any proper friends. Her only friend is that Mica guy, and he's just weird." Jade said, sighing.
"She's so ugly as well." Emily commented.
I tried to fight back the tears, but it was difficult. I suddenly started crying and I couldn't stop. I was just sick of everything today. I hated myself. Why did I have to be me? Why couldn't I just be normal? Maybe it wasn't the other kids' fault for bullying me. Maybe it was my fault for not speaking to people, and I deserved it.
Just then, Mica came back to our table carrying a tray with his lunch on it. He greeted me, then stopped when he saw that I was crying.
"Victoria, what happened?" he asked me worriedly, sitting down in the seat next to me.
"Jade and Emily. . .They called me ignorant and ugly. . ." I told him in between sobs.
"When will they learn to leave you alone?" Mica sighed, moving closer to me and wrapping his arms around me in a warm, comforting hug.
"Mica, maybe they're right. Maybe I am ignorant and ugly." I wept.
"They know nothing. You're not ugly or ignorant, you're beautiful and amazing." he reassured me.
"Thanks, but I'm really not." I said.
"You are, and I wish you could see that. You're always saying horrible things about yourself, and none of them are true." Mica said, letting go of me and looking me in the eye.
"You're the only one that thinks so, though." I said quietly, looking away from him.
"That's because everyone else at this school is stupid. They're the problem, not you." he said.
"Thanks." I whispered.
"It's true. I love you." he said.
"I love you too." I said with a smile.
