"Lani...", Lena sighed, bored. She glanced at her sister, who sat underneath an old maple tree, reading a book. Lani and Lena were nothing alike.
Lena was an optimistic and  playful young girl, who had always dreamed big dreams, about flying into the sky like one of the golden finches that darted about the air during the springtime, or exploring deep into an underground cave full of treasures. She spent her days in the garden, telling stories to the butterflies that lived there or holding long conversations with the painted daisies and tulips that grew there. But what Lena wanted most was a friend to talk to. One who was not a butterfly or painted daisy or tulip. A real person.
Lani was the exact opposite. She nearly always sat underneath her maple tree with her nose in a book and a wreath of flowers perched upon her head. This wreath differed depending on the season, and right now it was a circlet of colorful Autumn leaves. When Lani was not reading underneath the tree, she was likely adventuring on the other side of the thick brush near the creek. Lena had never been down there before, as she was afraid of what may lurk on the other side. Lani scarcely spoke, yet she always listened to the world around her. No matter where she was, she listened carefully.
Always listening.
