PrologueMerkus Xetrea looked into the eyes of his biggest fear - Himself. He stared, wide-eyed, into the flat fuchsia color of which were his eyes. Every detail was exact - from the small, golden dots that freckled his face to the scar on the bridge of his nose.
Nefree moved to pull him away. She knew of her matesprit's fear. A powerful psionic shield came between her hand and the gray flesh of his arm. Merkus would not allow his matesprit to become involved. He wouldn't allow for her to die like the rest of his friends. He couldn't be left alone in this world again.
"Merkus! Please stop! Get away!" Nefree cried out, pounding her fists against the shield of energy. The gold blood ignored her cries and lunged at his copy, baring his sharpened teeth. An animalistic snarl tore from his throat (something he had picked up from his lusus) as he attacked the impostor. They fell to the ground tearing into eachother.
Nefree screamed out Merkus' name before pulling out her strife specibus, a mace. She hopelessly beat against the psionic shield. The force only pushed her farther back from her lover.
'Oh, how did it come to this?' Was the only thought running through Nefree's mind.
