Early Leaving
A low, grinding static filled the space, a sound that seemed to warp reality itself. From the shadows, a figure unfolded. It was too tall, its form a shimmering, corrupted red that flickered like a broken television screen. Br!@Nn@. Its mouth was a permanent, cavernous maw stretching an impossible six meters, filled with a void that seemed to drink the light. Its black, oval eyes fixed on Octavia, and it glitched forward, leaving afterimages in its wake.
A hunting knife whistled through the air, embedding itself in the concrete between the entity and Octavia. Frank stepped out from behind a pillar, his jaw set. “You don’t touch her,” he growled.
Br!@Nn@’s head swivelled, the motion jerky and unnatural. It let out a sound that was not a scream but a data-error, a screech of corrupted code. It lunged. Frank met it head-on, his knife slashing upward. The blade passed through the entity’s arm, which shimmered and re-knitted itself. Frank was thrown back, slamming into a steel beam with a sickening crunch.
From the rafters, a pocket of darkness opened. The Doll, no larger than a child’s toy, dropped silently to the floor. Its button eyes reflected the flickering light. It opened its mouth, a void of black tendrils reaching out, but they simply passed through Br!@Nn@’s legs, unable to gain purchase on the towering form. The entity was too tall, its form too unstable.
The sound of rapid footsteps echoed. Julie Kostenko landed in a crouch, a knife in each hand. “No one fights alone,” she said, her voice cold. Joey Cadogan was right behind her, his own blade glinting. Susie Lavoie appeared on a catwalk above, a throwing knife already spinning between her fingers. The Legion had arrived.
The battle was chaos.
Julie and Joey engaged Br!@Nn@ from two sides, their hunting knives finding brief purchase in the entity's unstable form, forcing it to glitch and distort.
Susie rained down her self-made throwing knives from above, aiming for the entity's eye sockets, forcing it to recoil.
Frank, clutching his ribs, pulled Octavia back, using the distraction to create a path.
The Huntress emerged from a side corridor, her axe raised. She threw with brutal accuracy, not at Br!@Nn@, but at the ceiling, bringing down a cascade of debris that momentarily separated the entity from the group. The Foreseer, its single masked eye glowing, raised a hand. A sphere of shimmering psychic force expanded, pushing everyone back.
“Go,” the Foreseer commanded, its voice a chorus of echoes. “I have the path.” It gestured, and the air behind it rippled, revealing the swirling gateway of a wormhole. The Huntress led the terrified survivors through, the Doll hopping onto her shoulder as she passed.
The Foreseer held the line, hurling spheres of psychic energy that detonated against Br!@Nn@’s form, slowing its advance. It was not a fight to win, but a fight to delay.
Following the Foreseer, the group navigated a labyrinth of twisted corridors until they stood before the final wormhole. It pulsed with a sickly green light, the passage to the next universe. The Foreseer turned, its gaze scanning the group. “This is as far as I can guide you,” it said. “Beyond this point, I am blind.”
Frank turned to Octavia. He pulled her aside, away from the others. Without a word, he leaned in and kissed her. It was a desperate, final act, a goodbye pressed into the space between heartbeats. He pulled back, his eyes holding hers. He reached into his pocket and produced a small, silver necklace, a simple pendant hanging from a fine chain. He fastened it around her neck.
“This is a key,” he whispered. “It’s tied to my soul. Whenever you are in true danger, wear it. I will feel the pull. I will come.”
Octavia touched the pendant, the metal warm against her skin. She wanted to argue, to stay, but the air was beginning to shimmer. Br!@Nn@ was breaking through.
The Foreseer gestured. “It is time.”
Octavia looked at Frank one last time. Then, with Bri and Brian flanking her, she stepped through the wormhole. The world dissolved into a vortex of light and sound. The air smelled of ozone, and the ground beneath her feet became solid. The sky was a bright blue, and the landscape was just like the old-world Octavia knew back in her universe before everything went wrong. They were in the next alternate universe. But in her heart, Octavia felt the weight of the necklace and the promise it carried, a lifeline to a home she had left behind.
