Confronting Nightmares

Confronting Nightmares
The forest was wrong. Not the wrong of twisted trees and suffocating fog they had come to expect, but a different, dissonant wrongness. The rain fell in icy, diagonal sheets, blurring the world into a wash of grey and black. This was Slenderman's forest, but a version of it—a nightmare reflection. Bri, her axe held tight with the nail-tipped head pointed skyward, squinted through the downpour. Brian, gripping his sturdy metal pipe, moved with a protective instinct close to her side. Octavia clutched the Bully Eliminator, her ruler with blutak and sharpened pencils, her knuckles white.

A sharp, desperate cry cut through the storm. It was a hawk's screech, laced with terror. They sprinted towards the sound, the mud sucking at their boots. The cliff edge materialized out of the rain, a sheer drop into a churning abyss. There, scrabbling for purchase on the slick rock, was AK, the small brown hawk. Her gold and brown eyes were wide with panic as the mud gave way beneath her talons.

Without a second thought, Bri lunged forward, her free hand grabbing a gnarled root. Brian caught her belt, anchoring her. Octavia dropped to her stomach, leaning over the edge. "Come on, girl!" she yelled over the wind. With a final, desperate heave, Bri snagged AK from the cliff's edge, pulling the soaked, trembling bird to safety. The hawk immediately nuzzled into Bri's neck, shivering.

The relief was short-lived. A chilling laugh slithered through the rain. From the gloom, two figures emerged. One was tall, his face a ghastly white scarred into a perpetual grin—Jeff the Killer, a hunting knife gleaming in his hand. The other, Eyeless Jack, was a silent, hunched silhouette, his featureless face a black void beneath his hood.

Before any of them could react, a needle-like pain erupted in Bri's neck. The world swam. She saw Brian swing his pipe, the sound of it hitting something solid and wet, before his body crumpled. Octavia managed a single, defiant gasp before a hand clamped over her mouth. Then, only darkness.

Bri's consciousness returned in fragments. The smell of damp stone, decay, and copper. A low, throbbing light. She was tied to a cold, metal chair, her wrists and ankles bound with coarse rope. Blinking, she saw Brian and Octavia in similar states, still unconscious. Across the room, Eyeless Jack was setting up a small, ceramic incubator. A faint, sickly green glow pulsed from within.

Jack turned, his empty eye sockets somehow conveying a focused, predatory intent. He glided toward Bri, a scalpel in one hand. He was going to implant one of the eggs into her. The realization was a cold spike of terror. Bri thrashed against the ropes, screaming, but they held fast.

Jack leaned in, the scalpel cold against her skin.

A thunderous crack. The sound of splintering wood. Brian had wrenched his chair leg off against the stone floor, snapping one of the ropes. He was on his feet, lunging, his movements fuelled by pure adrenaline. The metal pipe was gone, but his fists were enough. He tackled Jack, sending the scalpel skittering.

"Get away from her!" Brian roared, grappling with the masked figure. Jack was stronger, but Brian was faster, fuelled by desperation. In the struggle, Jack's hand slammed the incubator. It cracked, and a single, small, pulsating egg rolled out, stopping near Bri's foot.

Seizing his chance, Brian grabbed a shard of the ceramic incubator and drove it into Jack's shoulder. Jack let out a guttural hiss, staggering back. Brian quickly worked at Bri's ropes.

"Are you okay?" he whispered, his hands still shaking.

Bri looked down at her foot, where the single, tiny egg lay. "I think... only one," she breathed, feeling a cold knot of dread settle in her stomach. "We have to get it out."

The basement door slammed open. Light flooded in, and with it came a group. A figure in a black hoodie and a yellow porcelain mask emblazoned with a smile led the charge—M.M. Behind her, a brown hawk, AK, perched on her shoulder. Beside M.M. was another woman in black, silent, her Uranus-coloured eyes scanning the room—B.H. A large blue eagle, Cleaver, landed on a pipe, watching the scene. A stocky, brutal-looking figure was Void, a heavy crow, while another, the lean and menacing Cleaver, launched himself straight at Jeff the Killer, talons outstretched. Jeff raised his arm, and Cleaver's claws raked deep scratches into it.

M.M. moved like a ghost. In a blur of motion, she had her two daggers at Jeff's throat and her gun pointed at Jack's head. "Enough," she said, her voice calm and steely. "You're outnumbered."

B.H. knelt beside Bri, her hunting knife slicing through the ropes efficiently, while Void perched on her shoulder, cawing instructions. "Check her abdomen," the raven squawked, a strangely feminine voice coming from her beak. "Look for any sign of insertion. The eggs glow."

Bri pulled up her shirt. There, faintly glowing on her lower stomach, was a small, greenish mark, like a bruise. The single egg.

"We can remove it," Void said, speaking for B.H. who was now cleaning her knife with a cloth. "But not here. We need a sterile space."

M.M. stood over the subdued Jeff and Jack, who were now tied up by Brian and Void. She looked at AK, who was nuzzling Octavia's hand. Then she turned to the group, her masked face unreadable.

"You saved AK," she said, her voice softer now. "That debt is now paid in full. My group owes you our help."

Bri rubbed her sore wrists. "We need to find a way to The Operator's lair. He has our friend, Lilli Wallace."

B.H. nodded. Void squawked, "We know a portal. Beneath the Slendermansion. But the path is guarded by his creations. And by Brianna."

B.H. touched her chest, then pointed a firm finger towards the door, a look of grim determination on her face. She was ready to guide them.
B.H. led them through the winding, cursed corridors of the Slendermansion. The mansion groaned and shifted around them, but she navigated with an uncanny certainty. They descended into a forgotten wine cellar, where the air was thick with dust and the scent of old decay. In the centre of the floor, a shimmering, vertical rip in reality pulsed, the edges bleeding a sickly violet light.

Void croaked, "Beyond this is The Operator's domain. It's a void space. He can control everything there. You will face him directly. And you will face Brianna. And you will face... Br!@Nn@."

M.M. stepped forward, her daggers drawn. "Cleaver, AK, you're with me." The two birds launched off her shoulders, ready for flight. She looked at Brian and Bri, then at Octavia, who was gripping her Bully Eliminator. "Are you sure about this?"

Bri hefted her axe. "For Lilli."

Brian twirled his metal pipe. "For our friend."

Octavia took a step forward and aimed her ruler at the portal. "For everyone who's ever been afraid."

They stepped through the cold, tearing light, ready to face their nightmares. Behind them, B.H. and Void stood guard, silent sentinels in a mad world. The final confrontation was about to begin.
