What comes first?

A chicken in this case is hatched from a fertilised, by sperm, egg. A regular egg is basically a chicken's period because it is the egg without it being fertilised by a male. When it is, further mutations can "tweak" the already altered genetic material. The mix between the two DNA also helps with these slight "tweaks" slowly between these tweaks and outside forces such as natural selection (say shorter legs are better because they outrun predators more often, the longer leg gene'll start dying out until all chickens have short legs), you end up with an entirely different species which we can recognise as something else.
