The reason my favourite characters in Hetalia are Prussia and Romano is pretty simple:
One had a bad family life, a bad father, younger sibling was the golden child and they were treated like shit. Uses humour and ego to cover up the fact that they're so alone, and just want to be remembered. Goes online all the time, and tries to make the best of bad situations, even though it actually hurts.
The other is an emotional wreck. Constantly angry, always yelling, trying to boast but See More then hating themselves. Insulting others but hates being insulted, yells at others but hates being yelled at. Thinking everyone hates them, thinking that everyone loves their sibling more than them. But a real softy, a sweet and nice person hiding behind a wall of emotions that control them more than they control them.
