all of the characters in yume nikki are supposed to represent madotsukis (the main character) trauma. madotsuki is the shy and traumatized girl, poniko was someone she trusted who turned out to be a bad person (thats why she turns into uboa), monoko is supposed to represent madotsuki herself because at first she looks normal then she grows three extra arms and her eye bleeds representing she looks normal but is really messed up once you find out more, masada is supposed See More▼ to be someone who also has trauma like her thats why it seems as if he shows some sympathy, mafurako is supposed to be another side of madotsuki, madotsuki feels as if she’s invisible and can only be seen by certain people and mafurako is supposed to represent that. since monoe disappears all the time, that’s supposed to indicate that madotsukis friends always end up leaving.
