PS2 plays both PS1 and PS2 games. You never needed a PS1. Even PS3 plays PS1 games. Only the launch model version of the PS3 plays PS2 games. I suggest PS2 if you want to play both PS1 and PS2 games. PS3 is usually for PS3 games only. It plays PS1 games, but I think it’s better on PS2 for those games. Also, the launch models aren’t that strong and tend to overheat.
