I really wish I had friends in real life who watched what I watched...
I have one friend who watches SAO and is willing to watch Death Note with me, I hardly ever see her and she can get involved in drama sometimes... girls... >.<

I want to go into the Madoka Magica Wikipedia and put as many headless Mami puns as I can.

Mami was a great character...
Mami is the only one who made the contract for herself and not someone else. Yet, she suffered with being alone for so long, and only when she finally had hope, she died.
Mami is such a beautiful character in her earnest belief that she can fight evil, she can do justice, and she can save the day. What makes her so tragic is that she doesn't realize that the whole system is rigged from the start. She's not fighting evil, she's not doing justice, See More and she's not saving the day. She's only playing a role, just like a domesticated farm animal. The slaughter always comes for magical girls, but Mami's too naive to see it coming. Yet, we love Mami anyway because of her optimism, bravery, and leadership.
I understand her death in the plot as part of the "rude awakening" for the new girls. It is also a "rude awakening" of adulthood- This world doesn't always reward people like Mami. No amount of bravery or optimism can protect those girls from the cruelty of life. This is not a Just World where people get what they deserve. This show is dark and Mami is the character that really defined what world magical girls lived in.
If Sayaka and Madoka were a little bit more mature, they wouldn't have taken that bargain. Basically this show is all around tragic, but in an cute, unassuming package.... which somehow serves to make it even MORE tragic. Even the end of the first season, while it looks like a happy ending, is ridiculously cruel. Poor madoka dedicated eternity to destroying witches before they are born and the others are fighting monsters that go by a different name now, still making contracts, still doomed to suffer. Madoka's wish ends up being pointless because Kyubey just makes a new system- and then you remember her mother saying goodbye against the windows showing the storm. Her mother asked Madoka if she was sure she wasn't being tricked. The "Goddess of Hope" is suddenly just as tragic of a figure as Mami.

Sometimes, life is hard. But once you get over the rough and bumpy parts, everything is clear. Like a valley of flowers and beauty.
