Chapter 1.

Church

"Patience!" Mother yells from the kitchen. "Come here at once! It's time to attend church!"
I sigh, and slip on my leather shoes. "Coming, Mother!" I stand up, open the door of my room, and walk to where Mother is. She scoffs.
"Look at this, you dirty child! What is this?" She pulls a dried leaf from my hair. "If your father wasn't so insistent that you attend church, I would leave you home. You're a disgrace to this family." She grabs my arm and pulls me out of the house and down the road. "Come on."
When we arrive at church, I sit next to Father in a pew. Mother sits on the other side of Father, as far away from me as she can get. I try to concentrate on what the pope is saying, but something feels different in the air. It's a familiar presence, and I mentally groan. Why did he have to come here? Couldn't he have waited until church was over?
Several other people are murmuring to each other, and shifting in their seats. They feel it too. The pope is visibly uncomfortable, but he continues his speech. Then the chandelier begins squeaking, and everybody looks up. It's spinning around, and now the pope stops talking. Someone screams, and the pope starts reciting a prayer.
No one else sees what I see when I look up at the ceiling. I see him. No one else can. He looks down at me from where he's swinging on the chandelier, and drops all the way down to the floor. I'm at the end of the pew, next to the aisle, and he walks over to me.
        Satan.
I'm sure you're wondering why I'm not terrified, why I'm not even surprised. Well, I'm not surprised because Lucifer regularly visits. And that is because I am a witch. I do not know how or why, but one spring day, my magic showed up - just like that. So yes, witches do associate with the devil. But he's not like you think. He's not intimidating and evil. In fact, he's quite the opposite.
Now, in church, while everyone but me is bent over in prayer, Lucifer stands next to me. And he says, "Patience, I'm bored. Will you play with me?"
Yes, I know. It's not what you'd expect, isn't it? Most people believe Satan is bad, but that is untrue. He has good intentions, but bad things happen around him by accident. He has the size and personality of a six-year-old. He's not red and covered in fire, either. Instead, he is small and blue, with a pointed tail. He doesn't live in hell - he lives anywhere and everywhere he pleases. And he's not an angel-turned-bad made by god. He's god's brother.
Quite contrary to what you learned, isn't it?
        Lucifer told me the story...
